As servants to the Spirits, the sole role of the Lokomo is to protect the land, most importantly, to protect it from the Demon King, Malladus.  After meeting the guardian of the Tower of Spirits, Anjean, Link travels across Hyrule meeting the Lokomo sages of each realm in order to restore the Spirit Tracks, the chains that bind Malladus.  With Zelda's Spirit Flute, Link performs a number of duets with the Lokomos as it is the only way to restore the Spirit Tracks.
In the final battle of the against Malladus, Link, with the inner power of Zelda and the Lokomos perform one last song together to weaken the Demon King.  When Maladus is finally slain the Lokomo, whom are no longer needed, ascend to the heavens, now at peace.
