Each upgrade allows Link to carry an extra item in the Adventure Pouch. The Adventure Pouch can be upgraded three times at Beedle's Shop for 300, 600 and 1200 Rupees respectively, and a final upgrade rests in a Goddess Cube Chest at Pumpkin Landing that can be unlocked by striking a Goddess Cube found outside Skyview Temple.

The Adventure Pouch can hold Medals, Shields, Bottles, Quivers, Bomb Bags and Seed Satchels. When one of these items is obtained while the Adventure Pouch is full, the obtained item will be send to the Item Check in the Skyloft Bazaar. The primary way to obtain items for the Adventure Pouch is through searching for Goddess Chests.

If Link has the Cursed Medal equipped, he cannot open his Adventure Pouch and cannot equip a Shield, as a cost for increased odds of finding treasure and Rupees.

ALBW
The Blacksmith's Wife gives the Pouch to Link after Gulley goes missing. She tells Link that her son wanted to give it to him, but decides to let the young hero have it so she won't have to worry about him as well. Once Link acquires the Pouch, he is now allowed to use an item on the X button, while previously he was only allowed an item on the Y button. This allows Link to equip two items at a time.
