Personally, I never took the statement at the end of A Link to the Past literally. I always thought it was silly to believe that in 1991 Nintendo knew enough about the future of The Legend of Zelda series that they would actually claim that a key item would never be used again. Now that A Link Between Worlds has been released, I think it is clear that the statement "the Master Sword sleeps again forever" is no longer canon (if it ever was).
