Spiked Beetles are turtle-like enemies first encountered on Koholint Island in LA. Under normal conditions a Spiked Beetle will crawl around a room at a leisurely pace, but when it spots an intruder it will charge toward the adversaries in hope of crashing into them with it's spiked shell. However, if Link can defend himself using an object such as a Shield he can flip it over, exposing its weak underbelly. A little known trick that can also be used against these creatures is recounted to Link by a Cukeman in either OOS or OOA: Link can also flip these foes by using the Shovel. This is one of the few offensive uses for this tool. Also in these games, Link is also able to rid the monsters from his path by use of Gale Seeds.

are recurring Series in Series.LANS

Spiked Beetles are partly based on and share their Japanese name with Spiny, an enemy from the Mario games. As such despite their name their status as beetles is very questionable, as Spinies are turtles. Spinies commonly appear as red, but they do have green and blue variations akin to those seen in the Zelda franchise.
Characteristics
Series are turtle-like creatures with pointed spikes on their shells. Their appearance, as well as their Japanese name トゲゾー, are based on the Spiny enemies from the Mario (series) series. They normally crawl around rooms, charging towards Series and attempting to crash into him with their spiked shells. These shells block most attacks; however, if a Series is flipped over, its vulnerable underbelly is exposed. Their charges can be defended against with the Series, which also flips them over; however, a number of other items can also be used to flip them over, such as the Series and the Series.

When these enemies appeared later in FS and TMC, they underwent a design change that brought them closer to their Mario counterparts by revealing their faces, or at least their eyes hidden under their shells, and giving them a more reptilian appearance. They also now spin at Link, homing in on him rather than charging in straight lines. Using the shield is still an effective technique, but in The Minish Cap, Link can use the Cane of Pacci to flip them over.
-
LANS in LA inhabit LANS; they are found in LANS, LANS, and LANS. They slowly crawl about the room, immediately dashing towards LANS in a straight line to attack when they spot him. When they are upright, they are completely invulnerable to all attacks. Only by blocking their attack with the LANS can they be flipped over, exposing their weak underbellies. If left alone, they will eventually flip back onto their feet.

-
OoS in OoS appear identically to their appearance in LA. When OoS comes into their view, they will charge at him in a straight line. They can be flipped over with the OoS as before; however, they can also be flipped over with the OoS. OoS can also use or shoot OoS at them, warping them out of the room. They are found in OoS, OoS, the OoS, the OoS, and the OoS.

-
OoA in OoA appear identically to their appearance in LA. When OoA comes into their view, they will charge at him in a straight line. They can be flipped over with the OoA as before; however, they can also be flipped over with the OoA. OoA can also use or shoot OoA at them, warping them out of the room. They are found in the OoA and the OoA.

-
FS in FS behave similarly to their previous incarnations, though they withdraw into their shells and spin at the FS while homing in on them rather than charging in straight lines. The FS remains the only item that can flip them over, and is typically provided near areas where FS can be found. They appear slightly more reminiscent of Spinies from the Mario series, being shelled reptilian creatures. They are found in the FS, the FS, FS, and FS, as well as the FS and the FS.

-
TMC
TMC in TMC appear identically to their appearance in FS. They will withdraw into their shells and hurl themselves at TMC in a spinning attack. While the TMC can still be used to block and flip them over, the TMC can also be used to turn them onto their backs. The explosions of well-placed TMC can be used to flip them over, as well. They appear in the TMC and the TMC.

Trivia
Trivia
*In terms of appearance and weakness, Spiked Beetles are very similar to Terrorpins appearing in ALTTP and FSA and appear to be partially based on them.
* Series and Series were confused with Series in the enemy roster of the Nintendo Player's Guide for -, both being given the same method of defeat (by flipping them over) despite not having any relation to this enemy.
*Snappers in MM also shares similarities with Spiked Beetles, particularly their spinning method of attack and their weakness.

*The Japanese name for this enemy, "Togezō" comes from the word 棘, meaning thorn. Other enemies that use this word in their names include Spiny Chuchu and Mulldozer.
Nomenclature
*The reason for this enemy being named as a beetle in the English versions of the games may relate to the name of Buzzy Beetle, a similar turtle enemy in the Mario series.
The name Series refers to the enemy's spiny shell. The name may be derived from Buzzy Beetles, another turtle-like enemy in the Mario series that are similar to Spinies, but without spiked shells. Their Japanese name, "Togezō", comes from the word 棘, meaning thorn.
*Beetles and Spiny Beetles were confused with Spiked Beetles in the Enemy Roster of the Nintendo Player's Guide for Link's Awakening, both being given the same method of defeat (by flipping them over) despite not having any relation to this enemy.
