On his sixteenth birthday, six years after {{Term|Series|Ganon|link}}'s defeat, a glowing {{Term|Series|Triforce|link}} mark appears on the back of Link's left hand. {{Term|TAoL|Impa|link}} guides him to {{Term|TAoL|North Castle|link}} and presses the back of his hand against the sealed doorway. Inside they find the altar of the sleeping {{Term|TAoL|Princess Zelda I|link}}. Impa recounts the story of Princess Zelda I. She entrusts him with six {{Plural|TAoL|Crystal|link}} and an ancient scroll written by the {{Term|TAoL|King of Hyrule|link}} who had hidden the {{Term|TAoL|Triforce of Courage}}. {{Term|TAoL|Link}} learns from reading the scroll that the crest on his hand is the result of a spell cast by the King, marking him as worthy of the hidden Triforce of Courage. The scroll indicates that the Triforce of Courage is located in the {{Term|TAoL|Great Palace|link}}. To undo the binding force around the Great Palace, {{Term|TAoL|Link}} must go to each of the six {{Plural|TAoL|Palace|link}} in {{Term|TAoL|Hyrule}}, defeat the {{Term|TAoL|Guardian|link}} defending it, and set the {{Plural|TAoL|Crystal}} in the heads of statues located in the {{Plural|TAoL|Palace}}. {{Term|TAoL|Impa}} tells {{Term|TAoL|Link}} that by uniting the three pieces of the Triforce, he can undo the spell cast on the sleeping {{Term|TAoL|Princess Zelda}} and bring peace back to {{Term|TAoL|Hyrule}}.<ref name="E 222"/><ref>{{Cite Book|quote= |book= HH|publisher= |page= 108}}</ref><ref>{{Cite Manual|quote= |game= TAoL|page= 4-12}}</ref>
