After Link and [[Princess Zelda#Skyward Sword|Zelda]] are attacked by a black tornado, Link wakes up in his room, where he hears Fi speaking to him. Throughout Link's journey, Fi aids the young hero in providing him with information about the area he is in, the enemies he is facing, and even giving him messages directly from Hylia to Link.<ref>needs ref here</ref> Link can talk to Fi any time by pressing down on the D-Pad of the Wii Remote.<ref>{{cite|I reside within your sword and will accompany you in your travels. Fi will also tell the hero how many times he has defeated this type of enemy and gives an indication of how good Link is in fighting this specific type of enemy. When this is used on [[Boss]]es, Fi will usually give a limited supply of information about the enemies weaknesses to Link. If the battle goes on for a while and Fi is once again asked to give advice, more information will be available. Fi also has a "treasure-seeking ability" called [[Dowsing]]. The young hero can then choose in the Dowsing menu which specific object or person he wishes to track down. The closer Link gets to the target, the faster the sword will beep. In an interview, [[Eiji Aonuma]] stated his belief that Fi is not a female. This would imply that the entity is genderless.
