The five Giant Columns were created by the [[Sheikah]] alongside the [[Guardian (Breath of the Wild)|Guardians]] to aid the battle against [[Calamity Ganon]] during the events of the first [[Great Calamity#First Great Calamity|Great Calamity]]. Their purpose was to contain Guardians and would automatically emerge from below [[Hyrule Castle (Breath of the Wild)|Hyrule Castle]] upon Calamity Ganon's return to Hyrule.

When Calamity Ganon returned during the events of the second [[Great Calamity#Second Great Calamity|Great Calamity]], he took over the columns and presumably all Guardians within them. They have since remained visible above ground around Hyrule Castle in a pentagon-shaped formation.

Being structures built by the Sheikah, they have a similar appearance to the Sheikah's other creations, such as [[Ancient Shrine]]s and [[Sheikah Tower]]s. As such, their surfaces are not naturally scalable by [[Link]], though it is possible to climb them using the portruding patterns as makeshift platforms. At the top of each column lies a broken-down Guardian, which all yield an [[Ancient Material]] upon examination.
