The Sacred Realm is first mentioned in the opening story of {{ALttP|-}}, where it is depicted as the mythical "Golden Land" where the wish-granting Triforce is said to reside.<ref name=Quote6/> It is said to have been a beautiful realm where the sky shined gold rather than blue.<ref name="Quote8"/> This magical realm was said to be home to the Temple of Light, where the Triforce would shine down upon the Golden Land from above, beckoning to the outside world for one to come in search of it.<ref>{{Cite Manual|quote=From its hiding place in the so-called Golden Land where the gods placed it, the Triforce beckoned people from the outside world to seek it in the hope that someone worthy of these titles would find it.|game= ALttP|page=3–4}}</ref>

During the [[Downfall Timeline]], Link, the Hero of Time, despite his best efforts, is defeated by Ganondorf in the final battle. Ganondorf obtained the remaining Triforce pieces from Link and Zelda, and was subsequently sealed within the [[Dark World|corrupted Sacred Realm]] by the seven Sages. Obtaining the true power of the complete Triforce, he is transformed into the Demon King Ganon. In a desperate last resort, the Seven Sages seal Ganon along with the complete Triforce away in the Sacred Realm, which was already transformed into the Dark World, as a reflection of Ganondorf's evil heart.<ref name="Dark Horse Books"/><ref>{{Cite|The resting place of the sacred triangle, the Sacred Realm, is a mirror that reflects what is in the heart... the heart of one who enters it... Within the Dark World, they were transformed into monsters by the power of the Triforce and became a part of Ganon's army. From here, he launched an invasion of Hyrule that was repelled by the Knights of Hyrule and the Seven Wise Men.<ref>{{Cite Manual|quote=[...]Ganon's evil army swarmed from the tainted Golden Land into Hyrule and attacked the castle. The Sacred Realm has only ever been toured in gameplay in {{ALttP|-}}, but in this form it appears as the corrupt [[Dark World]] ruled by the demonic [[Ganon]]. The Dark World was previously the Sacred Realm that was home to the Triforce before Ganon's incursion into the realm and the subsequent theft of the Triforce, resulting in the transformation of the realm and the creation of the Dark World.<ref name=Quote18/> In this form, the Sacred Realm appeared as a twisted, distorted copy of Hyrule that was meant to serve Ganon's wish to be the ruler of the world.<ref name=Quote19/> It was filled with evil creatures, and the spirits of the realm and any who ventured into the realm henceforth suffered as they were transformed by the Triforce's magic into a shape reflecting what was in their heart, leaving them to pray for the day when a Hero would come to challenge Ganon and take back the Golden Power, the Triforce.<ref name=Quote20/> The Dark World was plagued by dark skies and the very air was as poisonous fumes. As a mirror to Hyrule, the Dark World featured several similar locales to its Light World counterparts, though they were typically inverted to reflect the darkness of the world in which they were found. For example, [[Kakariko Village]] of the Light World (Hyrule) was replaced in the Dark World (the Sacred Realm) by the [[Village of Outcasts]]. And replacing the [[Tower of Hera]] of the Light World high atop the Dark World's version of [[Death Mountain]] sat Ganon's stronghold, {{Term|ALttP|Ganon's Tower|link}}. The Dark World eventually vanished after Link utterly defeated Ganon and took back the Triforce at the conclusion of {{ALttP|-}}, restoring the Sacred Realm to its former beauty, as it was before Ganon ever entered it.<ref name=Quote10/>
