Newbie Questions

Where did you get the pictures of the Phantom Hourglass Ships? I have completed the Stone, Vintage, & Dignified Ships and would like to find a way to take a picture of them off my DS.

Also, how do I create a user box

Cyan Link 08:48, 3 January 2008 (EST)
Hi, and welcome to ZW!
In answer to your first question, the images which I added to Ship Parts are from the official Phantom Hourglass minisite. Unfortunately, it's incomplete and currently has images only for those ships. I don't know an easy way to get an image from your DS to PC; a standard photo would turn out pretty bad, and I don't know if there is any kind of hardware which can be connected to the DS (either to input video to another source or to copy data). The best quality screenshot would be from an emulated copy on PC (don't know if that's possible for DS games yet).
The second question is easier! To create a new userbox, just copy the code from an existing box and substitute a new image, text and colours. Make sure to call the new template: Template:User xxxx (where xxxx is the description).
--Adam 13:30, 3 January 2008 (EST)
Well there is certain hardware that can record the DS, but it's not released to the public. Only for gaming sites like Gametrailers. --Green 23:35, 3 January 2008 (EST)

How do I make a signature like your's, instead of a simple link?--Claire 00:22, 18 February 2008 (EST)

It's pretty simple really, just go to your Preferences, and edit the text in the "Nickname" box with whatever wiki markup you'd like (you have to make sure that the "Raw signatures" box is checked also). Let me know if you need any help with it. —Adam (talk) 02:45, 18 February 2008 (EST)

Confused...

The user Captain Conflake is listed under the list of bureaucrats. He is alo listed under the list of Trolls. Did somebody lie? Cornflake seems to have done some trollish things, like createing the article ZU Death List. --Link hero of light 16:08, 3 January 2008 (EST)

If you read his user page and contribs it'll make more sense :) He's webmaster at ZeldaInformer, hence automatically a sysop here. --Adam 16:44, 3 January 2008 (EST)

Do you think you can delete some of his articles like Captain's Cock, ZU Death List and Capnmas. If those articles are on the wiki we mind as well get a article about my pet cat, my birthday and all the people I hate. It's no longer a zelda wiki, none of those articles are even video game related, it's just like adding an Indiana Jones or an I Love Lucy article!--Link hero of light 23:50, 3 January 2008 (EST)

If you check the history on Capnmas, you'll see that you're not the first to think this, or the first to be told otherwise by sysops. If I went around deleting this sort of stuff all the time, pretty soon we'd end up with a LOT of empty categories:

I already cheked the histrory, but some of the articles in those categorys deserve to stay. Since Captain Cornflake appears to not be on the wiki anymore, why don't we merge those articles with his user page. If he left he can't do anything about it.--Link hero of light 10:26, 4 January 2008 (EST)

Image question

I get the feeling putting "&" in the name of an image was not a good idea. It shows up in links, but I can't get the image's page up. - File:ImpaLinkTLOZ.jpg - Is there a way to fix this and why does this happen?IfIHaveTo 12:20, 5 January 2008 (EST)

Never use &! Ever! In the name of anything!!
Sorry, it's a painful lesson I learned myself :) The problem is that the wiki software cannot recognise the & symbol (and probably a number of other special characters as well - please don't try it!) You know how Windows won't let you use certain characters like ? or > is a filename? It's the same sort of thing. What seems to happen is that everything after the & sign just can't be recognized. For example Ball & Chain Trooper just links to a page called Ball! I had a real problem recently when someone decided to move Ball and Chain Trooper to the pagename containing the &, which then couldn't be accessed! We lost all of the edit history of the page, but fortunately I managed to drag the recent content back to the correct pagename.
In answer to your question about the image, it's been stored in the wiki's image database ok (here), and you can still embed it in an article like this:
File:ImpaLinkTLOZ.jpg
But that's it! You can't access the image's page by any means I have found, so there's no way for me to delete it, or for it to be renamed or moved. Jason may be able to delete it directly from the server, but I'd say it's best left alone. So the moral of the story is, no & signs! ;) --Adam 12:56, 5 January 2008 (EST)

Thank you. I'll make sure to never ever use any such symbol again. I re-uploaded the pic under a different name and put it in the article, so if Jason returns, he can delete the wrong file. I'm also sorry for uploading the same pictures for the Impa article (why on earth DID I check the Link gallery to see if those images were already uploaded, but not the Zelda II article?). I've replaced them as well, so File:ImpaTAOL.gif, File:ImpaTAOL2.gif and File:ImpaTAOL3.gif can be deleted now.IfIHaveTo 09:15, 6 January 2008 (EST)

No problem. I've deleted the duplicate images. --Adam 13:09, 6 January 2008 (EST)

I may be able to help

First of all, I would like to thank you for answering my previous question.

I noticed you are in the process of doing a major overhall of all A Link to the Past pages. I thought i should mention that I have GIFs of the in-game Sprite and Artwork of all LttP items and some characters, I'll be adding them to their appropriate pages but will leave the information to you since I have never played LttP.

Cyan Link 00:08, 6 January 2008 (EST)

Excellent, I'll try and clean up the articles a little where needed. I was mainly focusing on the enemies, which reminds me, does anyone know what this one is actually called and if it already has an article? [[File:Kyameron.gif|right]]
Also, you'd probably be best to post your storyline as a section within your user page (there's not really an appropriate area for fan content within the Main namespace of the wiki). --Adam 13:09, 6 January 2008 (EST)

bggy

could you get a proper picture of biggeron from orianca of time also do you think it would be a good idea to split biggron in to 2 articles phamtom hourglass one and orianca of time one

1) Yes. 2) No. --Adam 16:20, 7 January 2008 (EST)

Crediting Images

While I completely agree about the images, it saddens me that all the time I spend for my own personal site is basically useless as the images are soon to be stolen and used everywhere else. Can't people make their own images? Or at least credit the original source. Who cares if technically you don't have to, but how about just out of the kindness of your heart. Do I really need to start branding them with my own sites url in the background???

Hi Mases, first of all let me say that I think your site is excellent, and you've done a great job of getting some really unique images. I'm sorry that you feel aggrieved to find the images reused here without being credited, and I must admit that I'm one of the main culprits :/ In my defence I would say that I currently have over 700 images saved on my HDD to be potentially uploaded here, and I honestly have no idea where I downloaded the majority of them from! Most were obtained some time ago, and more recently I have attempted to credit the images I have uploaded here wherever possible. I would also point out that the extra time taken to credit each of the 1200 images I have uploaded here could have easily eaten up whole days out of my life... But all excuses aside, your point is valid and deserves affirmative action. One of the most valuable groups of images of yours which I have used here were those of the Minish Cap figurines, possibly available only from your site. As soon as I have enough time to do a proper job of it, I will go through and credit all of these to you, along with any others I can remember. --Adam 19:06, 12 January 2008 (EST)

Actually....

I wanted to discuss that with you. Are you available to talk on an instant messenger? I have AIM/MSN/Skype available if so. --»-LasT-ChaNcE-« 04:53, 15 January 2008 (EST)

opinon

What do you think on the people who only ever have edited 1 article should we delete there profile--Sutty08 16:04, 17 January 2008 (EST)

Why? --Adam (talk) 16:14, 17 January 2008 (EST)

your talk on you sig dosen't link--Sutty08 17:04, 17 January 2008 (EST)

Hardly surprising, given that you're already there... --Adam (talk) 17:08, 17 January 2008 (EST)

you no if you type zanramon in on google my page for wikipedia and zelda wiki come up

Why do you clog up my user page with this drivel? Now, if you were the top google result for your real name (like Jason), I may actually be impressed... --Adam (talk) 15:10, 2 February 2008 (EST)

Whoa!

I was just about to delete that page but couldn't figure out how. :O How you did do that? Ando 17:00, 17 January 2008 (EST)

By being a sysop ;) If you see something that needs deleting while I'm not around, just flag it with {{delete}} --Adam (talk) 17:11, 17 January 2008 (EST)

Pictures

I have a picture I want to apply for the Happy Mask Salesman, but I cannot figure out how to post pics on Wikis. Anybody know how to do this? I can post the link easily enough, but it looks very unprofessional, just having the link instead of the style we all use.

Read this above, and let me know if you have any other questions. --Adam (talk) 12:34, 19 January 2008 (EST)

Poe Sisters

Actually, I have the Little Women book. I will consult it, and then I will change the page accordingly. I am certain that Meg is the oldest, and Amy is the youngest. Those two are fine. I will consult Beth and Joelle now, to make sure that their articles are accurate. If they are not changed by the 19th January (18th in America), 10:00am, then they are the correct ages. -- Yuvorias

Edit: The ages have been changed, Joelle is the second oldest, and Beth is the second youngest. The book has spoken!

Templates

Hey, sorry to bother you, but I'm absolutely lost. D: I've been searching high and low trying to figure out how to create a template but I can't seem to figure it out. I know the coding. I just don't know how to save it as a template. Thanks. Ando 07:35, 20 January 2008 (EST)

The simplest way to create a new template is simply to link to the desired name using {{template name}} within any page. Just use the preview button, and it will give you a red link to the page you're trying to create. --Adam (talk) 07:40, 20 January 2008 (EST)
And now I feel like an idiot. :P Thanks much, Adam. Ando 07:41, 20 January 2008 (EST)

What just happened?

What just happened to the wiki, it looks like it got a complete makeover. And where did the problem center go? I don't like these new changes one bit.--Link hero of light 17:00, 20 January 2008 (EST)

Okay, well if you read the new section on the main page that will explain a lot. Basically the "problem center" is now The Heart Container, plus loads of new community stuff besides. I know change is scary, but that doesn't make it bad ;) --Adam (talk) 17:04, 20 January 2008 (EST)

I read it but it didn't make much sense, but now I understand. I guess The changes aren't bad, after all it's still under constrution. --Link hero of light 17:13, 20 January 2008 (EST)

Glad you approve ;p --Adam (talk) 17:15, 20 January 2008 (EST)

random

do you think it would be good to have a random image box like http://halo.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page in the navigation section on the right

I didn't know that was possible, but it's a nice little feature. I might put it up at some point (i.e. Special:Random/image). You forgot to sign your post (again). --Adam (talk) 15:10, 2 February 2008 (EST)

good job on adding the random image button--Zanramon 16:32, 3 February 2008 (EST)

What's THAT about, huh?

So what, do sysops get double votes on images? :P --Ando 18:40, 17 February 2008 (EST)

Uh, well... In my defence, I'd just like to say that, uh... I'm kinda stupid, forgetful and a little blind? (Really, I was just hoping nobody would notice ;o) —Adam (talk) 02:45, 18 February 2008 (EST)

england

You can be an english citizen but i dosen't matter--Zanramon 16:10, 18 February 2008 (EST)

"English citizenship" does not exist (nor does Welsh, Scottish or (EDIT)Northern Irish citizenship for that matter). All naturalised inhabitants of the UK are British citizens (or subjects, we are a constitutional monarchy after all!) There is no such thing in legal terms as an "english citizen". —Adam (talk) 17:56, 18 February 2008 (EST)

Why are you from england/or Uk and irland isn't part of uk only northen irland is--Zanramon 14:48, 20 February 2008 (EST)

how do you get a picture on your sig--anramon 16:50, 18 February 2008 (EST)

I don't know, and please don't try. I'm with Wikipedia's policy on this. Just look at this for an example of how annoying and obnoxious the results can be. —Adam (talk) 17:56, 18 February 2008 (EST)

More staff + place to meet

I'd like to expand ZW.org's *active* staff members to more than just you. I still attest that you're horribly overworked, even if you attest that you're so OCD about helping around here that you can't help it. So, my proposal is: (a) weed out the inactive Sysops, (b) get news ones that will remain active, and (c) have a place where all staff (including webmasters of owning sites) can come together and easily discuss and collaborate. What do you think? --Jase 16:51, 6 March 2008 (EST)

Sounds great. I've seen lots of excellent contributors to the wiki come and go in the past, so if some of our current high-quality consistent editors could be persuaded to stick around as sysops, that would be ideal. And that being the case, a "staff area" would be the perfect forum for generating and driving improvements, and maintaining high standards. —Adam (talk) 17:13, 6 March 2008 (EST)

I think Ando should be promoted to a sysop. He's done alot of helpful things on the wiki. And, athough he's not to active, I think Green Tunic should be considered.--Link hero of light 19:25, 6 March 2008 (EST)

Lol I visit once in a while. I've been busy with school, but things have calmed down for a while. So I'll be more active again. You don't have to nominate me but I just wanted to mention it.--Green 21:05, 6 March 2008 (EST)

I'm going to look into finding a way where the staff can have centralized, private discussions. I don't want to install wiki forum software because then it would be open to other people, and that would defeat the purpose of owners having their own forums. This wiki can never have a forum - that much is true - but a similar solution just for staff to collaborate and discuss wiki-related issues and possible improvements would be good. However, I'm dealing with some troubles on ZU right now, so I need to hold off for a little bit. I need to deal with ZU's designer and fix a problem occurring on the main site before I continue work on the wiki... so just hold on while I brainstorm 'n such. If anybody has anything good to suggest, the floor is open. That includes sysop nominations, I suppose. --Jase 11:19, 7 March 2008 (EST)

Maybe just a phpbb forum under the Zelda Wiki domain? That way you could create as many separate boards as necessary, but have them only viewable by a select group (e.g. anyone you set into the group "Moderators" or what have you). The only issue with this is that all the staff would have to register separately for these boards, but that would be a one-time thing. Yup. Also, thanks, Link. :D --Ando (Talk) 15:45, 7 March 2008 (EST)

Are u talking about new sysops --Zanramon 17:20, 7 March 2008 (EST) >:O

What if you find who has done the most edits(meaningful) And promote them so long time helpers can finaly be rewarded for there controbutions to the wiki--Zanramon 17:27, 7 March 2008 (EST)

I can see what jase means above some peoples last edits were in 2005 --Zanramon 17:29, 7 March 2008 (EST)

I've made a new forum off-site with the other wiki webmasters (some still need to join). In the coming days there should be a place where all wiki staff + owners can met up and discuss things. --Jase 09:50, 13 March 2008 (EDT)
Okay, so now that I'm back from vacation wiki owners and sysops will be getting messages from me about the forum. Hopefully it'll make things more organized and democratic around here ;) --Jase 18:32, 21 March 2008 (EDT)

featured articals

i still don't understand the rotation on the main page with the featured articals/pictures it changes everytime time i click on it. Could you explain please--Zanramon :) 18:43, 20 March 2008 (EDT)

Yeah I noticed that too. I didn't really want to ask, I just thought the rotation was to display every featured article/picture and get its recognition more than once instead of just being forgotten after awhile.--Green 19:51, 20 March 2008 (EDT)

I don't think I understand the problem/question fully? The article and picture change every 48 hours - I thought it was explained pretty clearly here and here? —Adam (talk) 03:56, 21 March 2008 (EDT)

ow i get it a bit more now--Zanramon :) 06:54, 21 March 2008 (EDT)
