Why save the JPEG

What's the point in saving the PNG and not the JPEG if you want a white background? You specifically asked people help clean this file up. It gets cleaned up, and so people want the JPEG deleted. It seems wrong to then make the PNG look like a JPEG, undoing hours and days of work that people put into it.

I guess I get the desire to preserve how the file originally looked, so you can document the changes. But why make that the original file? Sure, some think the white background looks better. But it's a lot easier to put it back than to take it away. (You can even put it back without changing the image, with a bit of CSS.) And every other image on this site that can have a transparent background does, so this image looks way out of place like this.

I mean, what you've effectively done is increase the file size 400% without any increase in quality. (In fact, if you converted back to JPEG, it would actually lose quality!) It would make more sense to keep the JPEG if that's the version you want. And the deletion indicates people didn't want that.

It's also rather disheartening for someone who wants to help with cleanup. I mean, will my cleanup of File:OoT3D Kaepora Gaebora Render.gif get undone? I've been working on that for weeks. And, before that, I spent another week figuring out a way to upload such a large file on my broken Internet connection. If all you want are white backgrounds, I can do that in an hour or so.

I am going to switch the file back. The original image will still be there for historical reasons, but then the work that all four of us did on this won't be in vain. Plus it will also fit in with all the other images of this type, and not make it look like we just couldn't figure out how to fix this one. Trlkly 06:14, 10 February 2013 (UTC)Reply[reply]

And if all of that was just code for "you did something weird to this image to make it look crappy"--that's probably the color reduction. I have a non-reduced version I could upload. It's the same exact pixels as the JPEG, except for the white background. It's just hard for me to upload files at the moment, so I like to make files as small as possible. This is a wiki, Trkly. Any work submitted to it is subject to reversal and constant change. It comes with the territory, and it's just something one has to be prepared for when undertaking a project on the wiki. I understand your frustration. No one likes to have their hard work reverted. But please do not take it as a personal affront. I would never revert anything unless I truly believed it was for the greater good of the wiki.
I had originally uploaded the white background version for documentation purposes, as I said, just in case someone else came along and decided they wanted to take a swing at removing the background, too. After I did that, I looked at the file and thought that maybe it's just one of those files where no matter how hard one tries, it'll look better with the background than without. That's just my opinion, although I'm not the only one who thinks so (see here). Ultimately, the popular opinion will decide what stays, like most things at Zelda Wiki, so I'd be interested in hearing what people think about the file.
Also, I'd like to point out that the transparency request for this image was made two years ago by a user that is no longer on Zelda Wiki. It was not the decision of any user who is currently active on the wiki. — Hylian King [*] 12:56, 10 February 2013 (UTC)Reply[reply]
