At the start of the battle, papers are seen dangling from the ropes that hold the sword down. If looked at closely, they appear to have ancient inscriptions written upon them. This may mean that the Death Sword was a demon from the ancient times. It seems that the people living in the [[Gerudo Desert]] were unable to defeat the demon (considering he is invisible to the human eye) so they sealed him in his sword. In terms of the sword, it seems that it was an object of [[Ganon|Ganondorf]]'s  origin because at the end of the battle, the sword is the only thing to burst into dark energy, while Death Sword himself turns into a group of bats and exits through the roof. This may mean that Death Sword was aided by Ganondorf, and used to kill the people of the desert.

Another theory, though more far-fetched, is that this creature has a relation to Volvagia. This theory only appears in the in progress fan fiction The Legend of Zelda: Heroes of Time, by Draconic, however, and is not necessarily true. This may be because of the theory that Stallord is Volvagia and that perhaps Death Sword and Stallord are different reincarnations of the same being. In the fan fiction, however, Volvagia says that the creature in the sword is his great uncle who made a pact with a demon who slowly took over his soul. Volvagia says that he was named after his uncle who was the Volvagia of the ancient Goron legends who liked to eat gorons, not himself.  This theory may not necessarily work however because of possible contradictions in Ocarina of Time.
