To defeat Helmethead, you should rely on the shield. It can guard against the fireballs from the boss and his helmets. Once the battle begins, wait until just after blocking a fireball and then jump and strike his head. Once you do this, it flies off and starts attacking you. Wait for this head to fly to the left side of the screen before attempting to knock off his new one. Once you do this, the battle will intensify greatly.
