The Slime Key is one of several Dungeon Keys in LA.
The Slime Key is required to gain entry into the Key Cavern in LA. To obtain the key, Link must travel to Kanalet Castle to retrieve Five Golden Leaves for King Richard. In return, King Richard will grant Link access to his dangerous back garden where an owl statue is located. When Link uses the shovel to dig under the statue, the Slime Key will appear. The Key has a close resemblance to the Slime Eye, the final boss of the Key Cavern, and is supposedly named after it.

He has something a bit more sporting in mind. He'll step aside and show you a secret stairway that leads to the bushy field behind his house. The Slime Key allows Link, upon inserting it into the Slime Keyhole, to unlock the access to the Key Cavern.

Nomenclature
The Slime Key may be named after Slime Eye, the Boss of the Key Cavern, with which it bears a close resemblance.
