Development of the film was announced by Nintendo on November 7, 2023.[2] According to Shigeru Miyamoto, he and Avi Arad have been working on the movie behind the scenes for many years.[3] Nintendo is also going to be involved in its production.[4] In the the official announcement by Nintendo, they claim that the film's purpose is to engage with and entertain a wider audience, beyond those who play their video games.[2]
