This is a list of the characters from Link: The Faces of Evil, the non-canon game made for the Cd-i as a result of a botched deal between Nintendo and Philips to create a CD-based add-on for the Super Nintendo. Link, Princess Zelda, and other characters that are part of canon are listed only with the information relevant to their place in the game.
Link
At the beginning, Link is seen to be similar to his canonical version, although with the ability to coherently speak and with a very childish attitude. He also appears to live in Hyrule Castle. He remarks that it is boring in Hyrule due the age of peace, but Gwonam arrives, telling him that he is the only one who can defeat Ganon, who has seized Koridai. Link then asks Zelda for a kiss, but is rejected. He then goes off to defeat the masters of the Faces of Evil and rescue Koridai. At the end, he fulfills his destiny by defeating Ganon, trapping him in the Book of Koridai, and asks Zelda for a kiss again, but then is rejected.
Princess Zelda
Zelda, like Link, is very similar to her canonical incarnation, although somewhat bratty and childish. In the beginning, she refuses to kiss Link, and is later kidnapped by Ganon. Link, after defeating Ganon, saves her, but is once again rejected a kiss. Zelda also seems to deny that Link saved her, implying that she has no memory of the incident.
Ganon
Ganon is portrayed in his "evil boar" form although green rather than blue, and appearing to be a wizard, similar to his cartoon version, and has ordered his minions to seize the Island of Koridai. Link is dispatched to defeat him. At one point, he appears in spirit form to capture Zelda, and when Link arrives to fight him, he offers him the Hobson's Choice of an alliance or death (His infamous speech: "Join me, Link, and I will make your face the greatest in Koradai! Or else you will die![moves his face towards the screen, resulting in a strange and distorted close-up.]") However, Link imprisons him within the Book of Koridai.
King Harkinian
Zelda's father and the king of Hyrule who was also featured in the Zelda cartoon series. His only role is at the beginning, in which he tells Link that peace is what all true warriors strive for while sipping wine. He allows Link to be taken by Gwonam to Koridai to defeat Ganon.
Gwonam
Nicknamed "the genie" or "Squadalah Man" by fans, Gwonam is a Koridian wizard who goes to Hyrule to get Link, so Koridai can be saved from Ganon. He then offers Link advice, and gives him an item to defeat Ganon after Link "has the vision to find (his) house". After Ganon is defeated, he returns Zelda and Link to Hyrule Castle.
Goronu
Goronu is the first of Ganon's minions that must be defeated. He appears as a greenish-skinned, bald wizard. Glutko
Glutko is a large, green mound with a single eye, his name having been derived from gluttony, or large hunger. This mirrors his manners, and he guards the Shrine of Koridai. He consumes Koridians with no remorse. He is first encountered in the interior of what comprises the nose and eyes of his statue, but Link kills him by making him swallow a Bomb, at the advice of the Beer Guy. Shortly afterwards, he is fought again at the shrine of Koradai, but is defeated again in the same way.
Militron
An armored minion of Ganon, Militron possesses the ability to turn Koridians into stone monsters that attack Link by crushing them and exposing them to fire, much like when coal is turned to diamond by pressure and heat. He fights Link, but when defeated, his armor explodes, revealing a fat old man. He is fought again in Ganon's lair. His in-game sprite is significantly different from his portrayal in cutscenes.
Harlequin
An anthropomorphic pig, Harlequin is a gambler who turns Koridians that lose all of their rubees while gambling at his casino into his minions with a strange, yellow bubble that he also uses to teleport. Link defeats him, and he deflates like a balloon. He is fought again in Lupay's area.
Lupay
A wolfgirl with the ability to turn Koridians into monsters using a rubee that "replaces (their) soul(s), Lupay is called "the most dangerous of Ganon's minions" by Gwonam. She possesses a third eye, but is defeated by Link when he deflects her shots with his mirror shield (in a manner similar to Wizzrobe from "Wand of Gamelon", fading away in a strange white light and most likely dying. She is the only major boss in the game, other than Ganon himself, who is only fought once.
Morshu
Morshu is a friendly and obese shopkeeper who lives in Goronu (the area). He sells Link rope, lamp oil, and bombs for a price. He is occasionally mistaken as Goronu himself on the internet, and is affectionately referred to as "the Shopkeep" by fans.
Ice Queen
A blue-skinned woman who lives in the frozen area of Sergion Caves, the Ice Queen is a powerful witch who sends Link to Fortress Centrum to acquire the "Treasure of Death", which turns out to be a "reflecting crystal". Once he obtains it and gives it to her, she enchants his shield with the crystal, so that it "curses the curser with twice the curse".
Frozen Woman
An inhabitant of Nortinka, she happened to be standing in a fountain, which was frozen by Ganon. She can still speak, and at her urging, Link uses a Firestone to free her. She gives him some Water of Life, but doesn't move away from the fountain, and freezes again, this time apparently beyond Link's help.
Fairies
There are two fairies who live in the woods in Spearfish Falls, and who name Link as their hero, giving him support, Life Hearts, and bottles of Water of Life.
Old Man
An elderly and oddly-voiced man who lives in Toyku Lighthouse, he gives Link a lantern, claiming that "It's pretty dark out there with all the evil about."
Old Witch
A witch who lives in Koridai, she turns one of Link's gloves into the Glove of Power once he gives her the grapple berries she asks for. She says that she is old and ugly, but still knows a few tricks.
Fisherman
An old man, the fisherman cheers Link on while weaving a net. He also catches a large crab while fishing, the biggest one he has ever caught. Link remarks that it is a Gohma, and the fisherman then praises him for his wisdom, giving him the Sword of Power, which can shoot energy beams.
Beer Guy
A man who drinks beer and eats a chicken leg in a house literally right next to the face of Glutko, he remarks that Link shouldn't fight Glutko, but feed him "somethin' spicy". Link acts on this information, and throws a bomb down Glutko's gullet.
Smith
A sunburnt man who is chained to a cliff wall who is the fat girl's father. He asks Link to free him, for the Arpagos of the area are driving him insane. Link frees him, and then the Smith enhances his sword with a Firestone, giving the ability to shoot fire.
Fish Lady
An enigmatic character, she is a fat woman who says something along the lines of "Dairas came straight from the crater till I boarded the vent. Used a skull for a latch and not one dairas figured it out!" What she means is up for speculation. She serves absolutely no purpose story-wise, and does not bestow Link any item or power-up, unlike most other characters in the game.
Fat Woman
A large woman, her necklace was stolen by the Gleeok, and she sent Link to recover it. In return, she gave Link a bottle and a kiss. She appears to unnerve Link slightly, probably due to her quasi-romantic advances, and was also married, but she claims her husband was turned into a monster.
Ipo
An old woman living in Noritnika who is "the Reader". Early in the game, she offers to read the Book of Koridai to Link, and once he gives it to her after obtaining it, reveals the Book itself is enough to defeat Ganon (and also the only way).
Sleepy Bones
A skeleton warrior that is awoken by Goronu to "find the living and cut their vile throats". Presumably among those destroyed by Link. The scene in which he appears is the only one of Gwonam's boss introductions that does not feature generic Koridians, although it can be assumed that he was one before he died. "Sleepy Bones" is most likely not actually his name, and was probably just made up by Goronu.
Fat Girl
A girl imprisoned aboard a smashed ship. She proclaims Link her hero and gives him a huge, mushy kiss, and almost crushes him in a bearhug, while telling him to rescue her father, the smith. She then tells him to "have a heart", and means it literally: he receives a Life Heart from her.
Astronomer
An old wizard-like man who appears to be trapped by Harlequin. He adds a "vacuum" to Link's lantern, changing it into the magic lantern, before leaving the vicinity.
Generic Koridians
Generic, nameless residents of Koradai who are only seen in Gwonam's introductions of the Ganon's minions. In these scenes, they are shown being turned into monsters by Harlequin after losing all of their rubies, having their souls replaced and turned into pig monsters by Lupay, "hardened with fire" and being transformed into Armos by Militron, and eaten by Glutko. Since they are not seen elsewhere in the game, it can be presumed that they have all been killed or turned into monsters, who would likely have been killed by Link. However, it is probable that all remaining ones were turned back into human form after Link defeats Ganon.
