The Flute Boy playing in the Haunted Grove, as shown in the game's ending.

The Flute Boy is a character in A Link to the Past. The boy's father in Kakariko Village tells Link that his son went off in search of a Golden Power and never returned. Link sees a vision of the boy playing his flute for the woodland animals of the Haunted Grove in the Light World, but the vision disappears as Link approaches.

In the Dark World's Haunted Grove, Link finds the Flute Boy transformed into a strange creature. The boy tells Link that he buried his flute in the Light World's Haunted Grove, and then gives Link a shovel, asking the young hero to dig it up. After Link finds the flute and brings it back to the Dark World, the Flute Boy says he can't play it anymore and asks to hear its melody one more time. When Link plays the flute, the boy turns into a tree.

When Link brings the flute to the boy's father, the man understands what has happened to his son and asks Link to keep it. Link plays the flute in front of the weathercock in the center of Kakariko Village, causing a bird to fly off. Whenever Link plays the flute on the Light World overworld, the bird can transport him to one of several locations. This is instrumental in reaching the sixth Dark World dungeon, Misery Mire.

During the end credits, the Flute Boy is shown back in his normal form, reunited with his father and playing again for the forest creatures.
