Tetraforce Theory

This a theory. This has not been confirmed by Nintendo.

Hyrule was in chaos and the four golden goddesses descended up it. Din, the goddess of Power and Fire, created the earth. Nayru, the goddess of Wisdom and Water, created law and order. Farore, the goddess of Courage and Earth, created life. Majora, the goddess of Speed and Wind, created rotation and revolution, giving Hyrule seasons, as well as day and night. Their labors completed, they departed to the heavens, leaving behind the Triforce with the goddess Hylia.

However, despite being immortal deities, they are not perfect. Majora, who wanted to become even more powerful, began to lust for the Triforce. The other goddesses, angered by her actions, banished her to an alternate universe, Termina. Majora, full of anger, became consumed by the Triforce, and became a demon of pure evil. She then gave the people of the land some of her powers, tricking them into monsters of her demon army. She also created the demon general, know as Demise, and the Demon Sword, along the sword's spirit: Ghirahim.

Demise then invaded Hyrule, and went to war with Hylia and the people of Hyrule. During the battle, Demise was able to steal Majora's corrupted piece of the Triforce, and by her instructions, used it's power to create the Anti-Master Sword. Hylia and the Eight Sages (Water, Earth, Fire, Wind, Yin, Yang, Light, and Shadow) determined to set things right, created the Goddess Sword, and the three remaining golden goddesses created the sacred flames for the hero, also known as the Fierce Deity, to transform it into the True Master Sword.

This is the complicated part. The Sages of Earth and Wind, along with Farore (who took away Majora's power over wind), created the Sage of Forest. To do this, Farore gave up her powers of Earth and Wind to the respective sages. The two powered-up sages gave up a majority of their powers they had to create the Sage of Forest. Grateful, the Sages gave up some of their powers to restore Farore's power. Also, the Sages of Yin and Yang also merged their powers to become Sage of Spirit so that they could give extra power to Farore and the Sages of Earth and Wind. (This is also why Link has unbreakable spirit.) This gave Farore the power of Courage and Forest, and the Sages of Earth and Wind went into hiding until the True Master Sword was awakened so that they could offer their prayers to it.

Before the hero could gather the sacred flames, he was defeated by Demise. Hylia, in panic, gathered her people and sent them to the sky. The remaining tribes was able to seal away Demise, and Hylia sacrificed her immortal form to strengthened the power of the seal. The hero and the goddess were reborn as Link and Zelda, and he rest is the events of Skyward Sword. After Demise was defeated, Link departed traveled to Termina, and with his ancestor's power, confronted Majora. After a fierce battle, Link was able to seal the demon goddess in a mask. Link was gravely injured, so he gave up his powers as a Fierce Deity and sealed it in a mask so one day his ancestor could finish the job. This lead to the events in Majora's Mask.
