Ocarina of Time

Growing up in the halls of Hyrule Castle young Princess Zelda, referred to by the Great Deku Tree as the Princess of Destiny,[4] was growing concerned with one of her father's associates, the Gerudo king Ganondorf, and a vision of his treachery did not help matters. Expressing her concerns with her guardian and nursemaid Impa she continued to watch the Gerudo despite her inability to do anything about him. That is, until a young Kokiri boy named Link snuck into her garden courtyard.

Convinced that Ganondorf was after the Triforce Zelda asked Link to find the three Spiritual Stones that will open the Temple of Time so they could prevent Ganondorf from getting them. Unfortunately Ganondorf made his move before Link could return, leading an insurrection in the castle he chased after Zelda, who had the Ocarina of Time in her possession, when Impa took her from the castle. Dashing out of the castle town with Ganondorf in hot pursuit Zelda caught sight of Link diving out of their way. She turned and threw the Ocarina of Time to him, trusting that he would keep it safe while Ganondorf chased after them.

For seven years Zelda remained in hiding, training in the ways of the Sheikah by Impa until Link, who had become trapped within the Sacred Realm, was freed. Appearing before him under the name of Sheik she assisted Link in awakening the seven sages, all the while keeping her real identity secret.

When Zelda finally does reveal herself she does so not only as the Princess Zelda but as the seventh sage and possessor of the Triforce of Wisdom, however, having being watching them from afar, Ganondorf then captures Zelda deliberately to drive Link into a fight to the death inside his castle.

In the game's conclusion, Zelda shows her wisdom explaining to Link that they must return to their childhood, and that no one will ever know of their trials to save Hyrule.[6] Majora's Mask

It is not known how long Zelda and Link stay together before he leaves for his quest in search of his companion Navi, but Zelda, as a child, makes a single appearance in Majora's Mask when Link has a flashback after retrieving the Ocarina of Time from the Skull Kid. The events of the flashback display their last meeting with Zelda stating her belief that they would meet again.

Characteristics

Princess Zelda perennially has a charming nature, and despite her age, possesses great wisdom. Her nature is that of a just, compassionate, graceful and self-sacrificing person. Zelda's most prominent display of compassion and selflessness was when she saved the life of Midna, the Princess of the Twilight Realm, who had been nearly killed by the false King of the Twilight, Zant. Zelda's wisdom is her most valuable attribute. As a matriarch, it is imperative that she make the wisest decision concerning the fate of Hyrule; in Twilight Princess when Zant threatened her life and the lives of all of her subjects, she wisely surrendered to him.[3]

Princess Zelda is one of the most important characters of The Legend of Zelda series, which is also why her name appears in the title of every game. Princess Zelda first appeared in the original The Legend of Zelda, and has since been featured in every subsequent game, with the exception of Link's Awakening and Majora's Mask, (although, Zelda from Ocarina of Time made a brief appearance in a flashback). Each Princess is chosen by destiny to be the keeper of the Triforce of Wisdom in their era, which is the main reason why they play such an integral role in the legends of Hyrule.

Throughout the history of Hyrule there have been several descendants bearing the name Princess Zelda although it has so far become unclear as to which Princess was the first to bear the name, although many suspect it to be the Princess Zelda of Ocarina of Time.

Twilight Princess

Zelda was the young matriarch of Hyrule until its invasion by Zant, the Twilight King, whom she surrendered to in order to prevent the deaths of herself and her people. Afterwards, she is imprisoned inside a tower in Hyrule Castle. It is revealed that Zelda is unaffected by the veil of Twilight Zant casts upon Hyrule, and does not become a spirit like all the other inhabitants of the kingdom. As the bearer of the Triforce of Wisdom, Zelda may have been protected by its power. Zelda, dressed in a dark robe, meets Link transformed into a wolf due to the Twilight and his Triforce piece. Later, she transfers her own power to aid the dying Midna, losing her physical being in the process.

After she is freed from Ganondorf's possession, this Zelda fights Ganondorf alongside Link much like some other Zeldas. In battle she weilds the bow and Light Arrows similar to her Wind Waker counterpart.

In Ocarina of Time Link met up with a mysterious member of the Sheikah Tribe, fittingly called Sheik. This person taught Link a multitude of different songs and gave him tips on how to proceed in his quest. At the end of the game, Sheik revealed himself to be none other than Princess Zelda in a disguise. During the seven years Link had been asleep while maturing to become ready to fight Ganondorf, Zelda had gone underground and taken the disguise as Sheik so that Ganondorf would not find her in his search for the two remaining pieces of the Triforce, one which was held by Princess Zelda herself.

  2. ↑ "I apologize for meeting you (Link) in disguise, but it was necessary to hide from the King of Evil. Please forgive me." —Princess Zelda (Ocarina of Time)
  3. ↑ "You must lay the Master Sword to rest and close the Door of Time... However, by doing this, the road between times will be closed." —Princess Zelda (Ocarina of Time)

Sheik, in Link's first meeting with him in the Temple of Time: I've been waiting for you, Hero of Time... When evil rules all, an awakening voice from the Sacred Realm will call those destined to be Sages, who dwell in the five temples. One in a deep forest... One on a high mountain... One under a vast lake... One within the house of the dead... One inside a goddess of the sand... Together with the Hero of Time, the awakened ones will bind the evil and return the light of peace to the world... This is the legend of the temples passed down by my people, the Sheikah. I am Sheik. Survivor of the Sheikahs... As I see you standing there holding the mythical Master Sword, you really do look like the legendary Hero of Time... If you believe the legend, you have no choice. You must look for the five temples and awaken the five Sages... One Sage is waiting for the time of awakening in the Forest Temple. The Sage is a girl I am sure you know... Because of the evil power in the temple, she cannot hear the awakening call from the Sacred Realm... Unfortunately, equipped as you currently are, you cannot even enter the temple... But, if you believe what I'm saying, you should head to Kakariko Village... Do you understand, Link?

Sheik (In front of Forest Temple): The flow of time is always cruel... Its speed seems different for each person, but no one can change it... A thing that doesn't change with time is a memory of younger days... In order to come back here again, play the Minuet of Forest. (learn Minuet of Forest) Link... I'll see you again...

Sheik, meeting Link again in the Temple of Time:

You destroyed the wicked creatures that haunted the temple and awakened the Sage... But there are still other Sages who need your help. In order to awaken all the other Sages, you must become even more powerful. You must travel over mountains... under water... and even through time... If you want to return to your original time, return the Master Sword to the Pedestal of Time. By doing this, you will travel back in time seven years... The time will come when you will have to return here quickly... I will teach this to you for when that time comes... The song to return you to the Temple of Time... The Prelude of Light... (learn the song) As long as you hold the Ocarina of Time and the Master Sword, you hold time itself in your hands... Link, we shall meet again!

Sheik, in Death Mountain Crater: It is something that grows over time... a true friendship. A feeling in the heart that becomes stronger over time... The passion of friendship will soon blossom into a righteous power and through it, you will know which way to go... This song is dedicated to the power of the heart... Listen to the Bolero of Fire... (learn song) Link... I'll see you again...

Sheik, in Ice Cavern:

We meet again, Link... If you came here to meet the Zoras, you wasted your time... This is all there is... With one exception, the Zoras are all now sealed under this thick ice sheet... I managed to rescue the Zora princess from under the ice, but... she left to head for the Water Temple... This ice is created by an evil curse... The monster in the Water Temple is the source of the curse. Unless you shut off the source, this ice will never melt.... If you have courage enough to confront the danger and save the Zoras, I will teach you the melody that leads to the temple. Time passes, people move.... Like a river's flow, it never ends... A childish mind will turn to noble ambition... Young love will become deep affection... The clear water's surface reflects growth... Now listen to the Serenade of Water to reflect upon yourself.... (learn Serenade of Water) Link... I'll see you again...

Sheik, after Link beats the Water Temple:

As the water rises, the evil is vanishing from the lake... Link, you did it! (Link warps in) Did Ruto want to thank me? I see... We have to return peace to Hyrule for her sake, too. Don't we? Look at that, Link... Together, you and Princess Ruto destroyed the evil monster! Once again, the lake is filled with pure water. All is as it was here.

Sheik, in Kakariko Village:

Get back, Link! (Sheik and Link get attacked by a swarm of darkness) Looks like you're coming around... Link... A terrible thing has happened! The evil shadow spirit has been released! Impa, the leader of Kakariko Village, had sealed the evil shadow spirit in the bottom of the well.... But the force of the evil spirit got so strong, the seal of the well broke, and it escaped into the world!! I believe Impa has gone to the Shadow Temple to seal it up again, but...she will be in danger without any help! Link! Impa is one of the six Sages. Destroy the evil shadow spirit and save Impa! There is an entrance to the Shadow Temple beneath the graveyard behind this village. The only thing I can do for you is teach you the melody that will lead you to the Shadow Temple... This is the melody that will draw you into the infinite darkness that absorbs even time... Listen to this, the Nocturne of Shadow!! (learn the Nocturne of Shadow) Let me take care of the village! I'm counting on you, Link!

Sheik, in front of the Spirit Temple: (owl flies overhead) Past, present, future... The Master Sword is a ship with which you can sail upstream and downstream through time's river... The port for that ship is in the Temple of Time... To restore the Desert Colossus and enter the Spirit Temple, you must travel back through time's flow... Listen to this Requiem of Spirit... This melody will lead a child back to the desert. (learn Requiem of Spirit while owl looks on, owl flies

Sheik)=(Zelda in the Temple of Time

I have been waiting for you, Link. Link, the Hero of Time... You have overcome many hardships and awakened six Sages. And now you have a final challenge, a showdown with Ganondorf, the King of Evil.... Before that... I have things I want to tell only to you. Please listen. Another unknown legend of the Triforce passed down by the shadow folk, the Sheikahs.... (cut scene) (centered) If you would seek the sacred triangle, listen well... The resting place of the sacred triangle, the Sacred Realm, is a mirror that reflects what is in the heart... the heart of one who enters it... If an evil heart, the Realm will become full of evil; if pure, the Realm will become a paradise. The Triforce...the sacred triangle... it is a balance that weighs the three forces: Power, Wisdom and Courage. If the heart of the one who holds the sacred triangle has all three forces in balance, that one will gain the True Force to govern all. But, if that one's heart is not in balance, the Triforce will separate into three parts: Power, Wisdom and Courage. Only one part will remain for the one who touched the Triforce...the part representing the force that one most believes in. If that one seeks the True Force, that one must acquire the two lost parts. Those two parts will be held within others chosen by destiny, who will bear the Triforce mark on the backs of their hands. (end cut scene) Seven years ago, Ganondorf, the King of Thieves, used the door you opened in the Temple of Time and entered the Sacred Realm. But when he laid his hands on the Triforce, the legend came true. The Triforce separated into three parts. Only the Triforce of Power remained in Ganondorf's hand. The strength of the Triforce of Power enabled him to become a mighty, evil king, but his dark ambitions were not satisfied. To gain complete mastery of the world, Ganondorf started looking for those chosen by destiny to hold the two other Triforce parts. The one who holds the Triforce of Courage is... You, Link! And the other, who holds the Triforce of Wisdom... is the seventh Sage, who is destined to be the leader of them all... (Sheik reveals himself as Zelda) It is I, the Princess of Hyrule, Zelda. I apologize for meeting you in disguise, but it was necessary to hide from the King of Evil. Please forgive me... On that day, seven years ago, Ganondorf attacked Hyrule Castle. (flashback) I saw you as I was escaping from the castle with my attendant, Impa. I thought I should entrust the Ocarina to you... I thought that would be our best chance... (end flashback) As long as you had the Ocarina in your possession, I thought Ganondorf could never enter the Sacred Realm, but... something I could never expect happened... After you opened the Door of Time, the Master Sword sealed you away in the Sacred Realm... Your spirit remained in the Sacred Realm...and then the Triforce fell into Ganondorf's hands. He went on to invade the Sacred Realm... Ganondorf had become the Evil King, and the Sacred Realm became a world of evil. All of this is an unfortunate coincidence. I passed myself off as a Sheikah and hoped that you would return. I waited for seven years... And...now you are back. The dark age ruled by Ganondorf the Evil King will end! The six Sages will open the sealed door and lure Ganondorf back into the Sacred Realm. I will then seal the door to the Sacred Realm from this world. Thus, Ganondorf the Evil King will vanish from Hyrule. Link... In order to do this, I need your courage again. Please protect me while I do my part. And here is a weapon that can penetrate the Evil King's defenses... The power given to the chosen ones... (centered) The sacred Arrow of Light!!! (You got the Light Arrow! The light of justice will smite evil!) (A great rumbling fills the room) That rumbling...It can't be!?

Ocarina of Time

In Ocarina of Time, a young Link has been raised as one of the Kokiri, the children of the forest. Unlike the other Kokiri, Link does not have a fairy companion, and is thus shunned by their self-proclaimed leader, Mido. Link's life changes one day when the Great Deku Tree, the forest's guardian, sends Navi the fairy to Link with instructions to bring him immediately. A curse has been cast on the Deku Tree, and he asks Link to break it; while Link is successful in defeating the monsters inside the Tree, the Tree was doomed before Link started Dying, the Deku Tree tells Link of the Triforce and directs Link to Hyrule Castle, where he encounters Princess Zelda.

Zelda sends Link on a mission to collect three Spiritual Stones and save Hyrule. Once Link obtains the Stones, he travels to the Temple of Time and opens the Door of Time with the Stones and the Ocarina of Time. He then draws the Master Sword from the Pedestal of Time. This action imprisons Link in the Temple of Light in the Sacred Realm for seven years so his body can mature, while Ganondorf takes control of Hyrule and seizes the Triforce of Power. Seven years after drawing the sword from the pedestal, Link is awakened as the Hero of Time by Rauru, Sage of Light[2]. Link finds that much time has passed, and he has grown up. He sets off on a quest to cleanse the land of Ganondorf's evil by awakening the Sages, who can seal Ganondorf in what used to be the Sacred Realm. Returning to the Kokiri Forest, he finds that none of his friends have grown up, and most now no longer recognize him.

After the player completes the first dungeon in this phase of the game, the Deku Tree's successor, the Deku Sprout, reveals the hidden story of Link's past to him. The Kokiri never grow up. The reason Link has grown, while his Kokiri friends have not, is that he is actually a Hylian, orphaned in the wars that raged before Hyrule was united. When Link was a baby, his mother fled with him to Kokiri Forest, and, mortally wounded, left him under the Deku Tree's protection. He was brought up as one of the Kokiri, and knew no differently.

Through the rest of the game, Link travels back and forth between the two time periods and his two ages using the Master Sword. At the end of the game, he is returned to his youth by Princess Zelda, and Navi departs from him.

Hero of Time

In Ocarina of Time, Link ages seven years after pulling the Master Sword from its pedestal in the Temple of Time. He is then given the title of Hero of Time . The term "Adult Link" is used to differentiate between his child and adult forms in the game. Following the completion of the Forest Temple, Link is able to pass freely between his child and adult stages to make use of different items and locations.

Unlike his child incarnation, adult Link is taller; has donned boots, gloves and white leggings; and generally looks more sincere. Adult Link is unable to make use of certain child-only items, such as the slingshot, the boomerang and the Kokiri Sword. Similarly, Young Link is unable to use items such as the hookshot and the Fairy Bow (not to mention the adult-only shields).

There is only one parallel Link who can be sufficiently compared to the Ocarina of Time adult presentation-the hero in the Twilight Princess. Most other games in the series do not cite or otherwise indicate an older character. Link is given this title after he wakes up after drawing the Master Sword.

It's speculated that Hero's Spirit, a mentor figure in Twilight Princess, might be the ghostly remains of the Hero of Time.

Twilight Princess

In Twilight Princess, Link is a teenager (around 17) who has been raised as a wrangler outside of Hyrule territory in Ordon Village. His friend, Rusl, requests that Link go in his place to deliver a sword he has made for the Hyrule Royal Family. Before Link can go on this journey, his village is attacked by King Bulblin. Link is knocked unconscious and all the children are kidnapped. When Link awakens he wanders into a darkness and gets pulled into the Twilight Realm. Once in the Twilight Realm, rather than becoming a spirit like everyone else, he transforms into a wolf. He is captured until a creature of the twilight, Midna, comes to his aid. She helps him escape and get back to the light realm, Midna however is only using Link to change the Twilight Realm (her home) back to normal; she could care less what happens to Link and the light world. Link must journey to save the children of Ordon Village and eventually save the entire Land of Hyrule from the mysterious Twilight. Link searching for the children saves the guardians of light, the light spirits, and he becomes the Hero Chosen by the Goddesses. He then sets off with Midna to find the Fused Shadows and stop the main antagonist, Zant. This Link is also called by some fans the Hero of Light due to him restoring light in the game.
