This article is about the Candle item from the first two Zelda games. For the enemy in Oracle of Ages, see Kyandokyan.

Template:Item Candles are items that have appeared only twice in the Zelda series. They are usually used to light up dark areas, such as a dungeon room or a cave. Some later titles have replaced the candles with the similar lantern.

Appearances

The Legend of Zelda

The Legend of Zelda features a Blue Candle and a superior Red Candle. In both quests (First and Second), the former can be purchased in several overworld shops for 60 Rupees, and the latter is found in the seventh level, Demon Labyrinth.

When used, either will shoot a fire ball a few tiles ahead of Link, which will remain for a few seconds before disappearing. Although the flame's main function is to light up dark rooms in certain dungeons,[1] it will also slightly damage anyone who walks into it, including Link himself. Either candle's flame can also burn down certain bushes in the overworld to reveal hidden staircases, including those leading to Lion Labyrinth in the first quest, and Demon Labyrinth in the second quest.

The Blue Candle is capable of only producing one flame per screen. The Red Candle can produce unlimited flames.[2] Once the Red Candle is obtained, the Blue Candle will be thrown away from Link's equipment if he has one, and he will be unable to purchase it.

The Adventure of Link

In The Adventure of Link, the Candle can be found in Parapa Palace[3] after defeating an Iron Knuckle. It lights up otherwise pitch-black caves and allows Link to see any enemies who may dwell within.[4] The Candle is an optional item. However, it is more difficult to navigate dark caves without it.

Other Appearances

The Legend of Zelda comic

The Blue Candle is briefly featured in the Legend of Zelda comic. In The Power, Zelda uses the Blue Candle in Ganon's lair while preparing to retrieve the Trophy from the Underworld.
