Description

Divine Beast Vah Ruta (pronounced /ˈruː.tə/ ROO-tə[1]), shortened to Ruta, is a Divine Beast and Dungeon in Breath of the Wild. It is a giant machine that is in the shape of an elephant. Many years ago, it was piloted by Mipha the Zora Champion. After Calamity Ganon took control of the machine, it created a torrential downpour in the area around the Zora's Domain making it nearly impossible to climb anything. The Divine Beast can be found in the Lanayru Great Spring, however, if Link approaches it before completing some necessary precursors, he will be thrown backwards by the beast's fury.

Taking Control of the Beast

Before Link can board Ruta, he must team up with the Zora Prince Sidon to disable the Beast. Link must disable the switches on the Vah Ruta's sides by swimming up waterfalls and shooting them with Shock Arrows. Each time Link disables a switch, Ruta sends an increasingly savage volley of ice blocks and spheres that Link must shatter with the Cryonis Rune. Once he has deactivated all the switches, he can enter the Beast.

Once inside, Link can control the Elephant's trunk (which constantly spews water) to various gears depending on the position of the trunk. To appease Ruta, Link must activate each of the terminals located throughout the Beast with his Sheikah Slate. After Link activates them all, he can proceed to fight Waterblight Ganon.

If Link is successful in defeating Waterblight Ganon, he is visited by Mipha's spirit and receives Mipha's Grace, a magical power similar to that of a Pink Fairy and the rain around the Zora's Domain finally stops, allowing access to new locations that were preciously unreachable due to weather. Link is also rewarded by the Zora King with Mipha's Lightscale Trident. Mipha's spirit and Ruta climb atop a cliff and send a red beam towards Hyrule Castle to aid link in his fight against Calamity Ganon.
