This article is about the recurring species. For information on the enemy from The Minish Cap, see Keaton (Enemy).

Template:Species Keatons are a race of fox-like creatures. They are first mentioned in Ocarina of Time, and appear as allies in Majora's Mask.

Anatomy

Keatons are three-tailed foxlike creatures whose characteristics are derived from the mythological Japanese fox creatures, kitsune, which are nine-tailed foxes. They have yellow fur and their three tails bear black fur on the tips. Keatons are said to recognize one another by the sheen of their tails,[1] indicating subtle differences between each member.

Appearances

Ocarina of Time

Main article: Keaton Mask
File:Keatonmask1.png

No Keatons appear in Ocarina of Time, though a Keaton Mask can be obtained as part of a trading quest. It is the first Mask obtained from the shop in Hyrule Castle Town, and can be sold to the guard at the far end of Kakariko Village as a gift for his son. Keaton is said to be a popular character.[2]

Majora's Mask

A single Keaton appears in several locations in Majora's Mask, hiding within Moving Grass and playing tricks on people.[3] In order to draw out the Keaton, Link must cut at least one clump of Moving Grass wear the Keaton Mask a before all of the clumps have been destroyed. The Keaton will then appear and ask the young hero five questions about people and locations in Majora's Mask.[4] The Keaton appears in all locations in Termina that contain Moving Grass, such as North Clock Town, Mountain Village or along Milk Road.

Keaton Quiz

There are a total of thirty questions that could possibly be asked by the Keaton, with three possible answers. If the young hero answers them all right, Link will obtain a Piece of Heart. However, if Link fails to answer the questions correctly, he can try again, but the Keaton can only be summoned once every three-day cycle. Choosing to summon the Keaton again and answering the five questions after receiving the Heart Piece will yield a Red Rupee as a reward. Should Link remove the Keaton Mask before speaking to the Keaton, it will disappear, though it can be summoned again.

Trivia

  • Though mutltiple bunches of Moving Grass appear in the Catacombs in the clearing Link falls into in the beginning of Majora's Mask, no Keatons reside within them. This is because Link is unable to revisit the tunnels after initially passing through them, so it is impossible to return there after claiming the Keaton Mask without cheating.

Etymology

Keaton seems to be based on the Japanese word, Template:Japanese. It is possible that the Japanese name, Template:Japanese, is a combination of the first letter in Kistune, "Ki" (), and "-tan" (たん) a childish suffix often used for mascot characters, as would fit with the Keaton Mask.
