Spumes are enemies in Skyward Sword.

Characteristics

Spume are medium sized, toad-like enemies that are similar in appearance and behavior to the Toadpoli. If Link approaches them, they will retreat into whatever liquid in which they are swimming. Once Link moves away from them, they will reveal themselves and begin to shoot projectiles at the young hero. These projectiles can be reflected back at the Spumes with a Shield Bash using an appropriate shield. The Spumes do not completely conceal themselves after diving, leaving a small part of their body open to attacks from arrows and a bomb-carrying Beetle.

Varieties

There are several kinds of Spume, with each type living in a different environment or region and are named after the type of projectile they launch at Link.

Magma Spume

Magma Spumes can be found inside the Earth Temple. They swim through the magma and spit fireballs at Link, who can slice the projectiles with the Goddess Sword, rendering them ineffective. Their fireballs can be reflected with a Shield Bash, as long as Link is not using the Wooden Shield or any of its upgrades. The wood will burn away if it touches the magma, leaving Link vulnerable. If a Magma Spume manages to hit Link with a fireball, Link will catch on fire and will need to do a Roll or a Spin Attack to put out the flames. Magma Spumes can be crushed if Link rolls over them with the large stone spheres located inside the temple.

Electro Spume

Electro Spumes appear in the Lanayru Desert region. They are very similar to the Magma Spumes but they are yellow in color. They live in the quicksand regions of Lanayru Desert and spit balls of electricity instead of fire. If Link touches these projectiles with his sword, he will get shocked and receive damage. They can be defeated by reflecting their electricity balls with a Shield Bash, as long as Link does not use the Iron Shield or its upgrades.

Cursed Spumes appear in the Volcano Summit and the Fire Sanctuary. These spit out balls of dark energy that will curse Link. He will not be able to draw his sword or use his items until the curse fades away. The Spume's projectiles can only be reflected with the Sacred Shield and its upgrades along with the Hylian Shield.

Water Spume

Mizupo (which translates as Water Spume) go unnamed in the English versions of the game, but can be found swimming in the Lanayru Sand Sea in the past. They are the normal type of Spume and are greenish-blue in color and will try to shoot balls of water at Skipper's boat. They can be defeated with a single cannon shot.
