In {{ST}}, {{Plural|ST|Force Gem}} are integral to the plot. The {{Plural|ST|Force Gem}} in the {{Term|ST|Forest Temple|link|display=Forest}}, {{Term|ST|Snow Temple|link|display=Snow}}, {{Term|ST|Ocean Temple|link|display=Ocean}}, {{Term|ST|Fire Temple|link|display=Fire}} Temples emit energy that is carried by {{Term|ST|Spirit Tracks|link}} to the {{Term|ST|Tower of Spirits}}, which the {{Plural|ST|Spirit of Good|link}} built to imprison {{Term|ST|Malladus|link}}.<ref>{{Cite|Long ago, the {{Color|ST Light Blue|spirits of good}} and the {{Color|ST Light Blue|Demon King}} were embroiled in a never-ending war. In the end, the spirits could not defeat him. But they did manage to imprison him in this tower.|Anjean|ST}}</ref><ref>{{Cite|It's not chains or bars that keep him imprisoned, but an energy that flows between the tower and the four temples that surround it.|Anjean|ST}}</ref> When {{Term|ST|Chancellor Cole|link}} and {{Term|ST|Byrne|link}} plot to resurrect {{Term|ST|Malladus}}, {{Term|ST|Link}} and {{Term|ST|Princess Zelda|link}} go to the four temples to restore the energy between them and the broken {{Term|ST|Tower of Spirits}}.<ref>{{Cite|At the top of this tower is your body. Restore the tracks between here and the temples.|Anjean|ST}}</ref> These {{Plural|ST|Force Gem}} are colored according to the {{Term|ST|Realm}} in which they are in. They each emerge from the remains of defeated bosses and rest on a winged pedestal that appears out of the floor. This restores the {{Term|ST|Spirit Tracks}} from the temple to the {{Term|ST|Spirit Tower}}, at the same time sending a burst of energy that restores another section of the tower.

The pedestal-mounted {{Term|ST|Force Gem}} is the symbol of the {{Term|ST|Spirits of Good}} which appears on the {{Term|ST|Rail Map|link}} and the {{Term|ST|Lokomo|link}}'s vehicles. For the same reason, the {{Term|ST|Shield|link}} is studded with an ornamental {{Term|ST|Force Gem}}—the {{Term|ST|Lokomo Sword|link}} has one in its pommel. One of each pair of {{Plural|ST|Spacetime Gate|link}} is adorned with a {{Term|ST|Force Gem}} whose color indicates whether or not the gate is active. The gate is activated by striking the {{Term|ST|Force Gem}} using the {{Term|ST|Cannon|link}}.

When {{Term|ST|Link}} helps certain characters, their happiness or gratitude causes them to emit {{Term|ST|Energy|link}} in the form of a small yellow {{Term|ST|Force Gem}} that restores yet more of the {{Term|ST|Spirit Tracks}}.<ref>{{Cite|You plan to continue your journey by train, do you not? Then you must always go forth with people's hearts in your mind. When you make people happy, their spirits emit energy. These grant access to new shortcuts, {{Plural|ST|Station|link}}, {{Plural|ST|Spacetime Gate}} and {{Plural|ST|Rabbit|link}} (generally in the {{Term|ST|Realm}} the person is in). {{Term|ST|Link}} obtains the 20 {{Plural|ST|Force Gem}} by [[Transportation|transporting]] {{Plural|ST|Passenger|link}} and {{Plural|ST|Cargo|link}} from one location to another.
