Kafei (カーフェイ, Kaafei) is a well known young man who lives in Clock Town, found in Majora's Mask. He enjoys hanging around at the Milk Bar, and his diary mentions showing off his ceremonial wedding mask to all "the guys" while he is there. He is son of Mayor Dotour and Madame Aroma and is engaged to be married to the innkeeper, Anju. He is renowned as being the first playable character in the Legend of Zelda canon series that is not Link.

Unfortunately, about a month before his wedding (which will take place the same day as the Carnival of Time), the Skull Kid turns him into a child. Kafei quickly seeks out the help of the Great Fairy, who lives in North Clock Town, but on the way Sakon, a thief from Ikana Canyon, steals his wedding mask (the Sun Mask).

Kafei promised Anju that he would show up with the mask and, not wanting to break his promise, goes into hiding at the Curiosity Shop. He disguises himself with a Keaton Mask that the Curiosity Shop owner gave him when he was a child and secretly watches all of the customers of the Curiosity Shop (which sells stolen goods). He is positive that the thief will appear and he will be able to follow him to retrieve his mask.

Bombers' Notebook Entry

Kafei is one of the twenty characters who has an entry in the Bombers' Notebook. Along with Anju's entry, the entire Reuniting Kafei and Anju sidequest's timeline is revealed.

Daily Schedule

Day 1

As soon as the counter starts, you will see the masked Kafei at the southern mailbox. If you ring the bell at the left side of the Laundry Pool, he will come out and look around, somewhat frantically. If you run up to him, he will immediately run back into the room. Unless you are participating in the side quest Reuniting Kafei and Anju, you won't see him again until day 3.

Kafei isn't inactive, however. He is watching for Sakon through a peek-hole from the back of the Curiosity Shop. Eventually, he writes a letter to Anju (what it says is unknown). Speak to her after she recieves it, and she will ask you to deliver a letter to him the next day.

Day 2

Kafei will recieve his letter in the afternoon, which is witnessable. At this time the room Kafei lurks in is now accessible. Now you can talk to him. You will talk to him for a short time, where he will reveal his identity to you, and will tell you to deliver the Pendant of Memories to Anju. Shortly afterwards, Kafei will see Sakon through the hole. He determinedly follows the prancing thief to where he is hiding the Sun Mask, in Ikana Canyon.

Day 3

Anju and Kafei reunited

As soon as the day starts, Kafei is behind two slates of rock, near Sakon's Hideout, in Ikana Canyon, waiting for Sakon to appear to open the door to the hideout. When Sakon does enter, and a switch is pressed inside, a game will begin in where you control both Link and Kafei, where Link destroys enemies to open doors, and Kafei moves blocks over switches, one opening the door for the other, until they can get the Sun Mask back. (see Reuniting Kafei and Anju). Its on a conveyor belt, so you have to be fast.

If you lose, Kafei will be utterly depressed. He becomes trapped in Sakon's Hideout for what would be forever if you couldn't use the Song of Time. If you win, Kafei will run to the Stock Pot Inn, where he will meet up with Anju.

If you decide to ignore the sidequest, Reuniting Kafei and Anju but help Kafei retrieve the Sun Mask, Kafei will go to the Stockpot Inn to discover Anju has fled with the rest of the town.

Day 4

After beating the game, there will be a wedding scene between Kafei and Anju, so regardless of the side-quest, they will be reunited anyway. Kafei is never specifically shown in this scene, but it is assumed he was turned back into an adult since the camera is put into Kafei's point of view, and he is looking straight at Anju's face.

The Pendant of Memories

The Pendant of Memories

The Pendant of Memories is a small charm that Kafei wears around his neck. When Link meets Kafei for the first time, Kafei gives Link the charm and asks him to give it to Anju. Upon receiving it, Anju will promise to wait for Kafei until he returns.

The charm has no real use while in your inventory, but is symbolic of the love Kafei and Anju share.

Sun Mask

The mask that Kafei gives to Anju as a part of their wedding ceremony. Sakon the thief stole it and took it to his hideout in Ikana Canyon. But once Link and Kafei retrieved it, they took the mask to Anju, who was waiting patiently on the second floor of Stockpot Inn. Accompanying the Sun Mask is a silver mask, the Moon Mask.

Trivia

A closeup of Kafei inside Sakon's Hideout (Courtesy Kafei A'La Mode)
  • A similar looking pendant to the Pendant of Memories is found in Twilight Princess. It is worn by Agitha but it has a different coloration.
  • In the Manga, Kafei, after being transformed into a child, seems to retain the strength of a man.(see Link/Kafei fight.
  • If you speak to the Astronomer in the Observatory, while wearing Kafei's Mask, he will mention that Kafei was a member of the Bombers when he was young.
  • Kafei makes a quick quote when you are talking to him in the Laundry room, such as Princess Zelda did in OoT, from classic Legend of Zelda: Please keep what we talked about a secret from everyone. It's another nice tribute to those who have played the original Legend of Zelda.
