Mesa
Birthplace: Outset Island
Personality: Slacker

Mesa performs his chores at very much his own pace. His vegetable patch is always full of weeds and he spends most of the year trying to clear it out.

He's surprisingly timid and often can't fall asleep at night. He's currently looking for a wife.

Mesa is a timid, orange-garbed single resident of Outset Island with a vegetable patch full of weeds, which he keeps trying to get rid of.[3] He lazily weeds his garden all year until the threat of Monsters messes with his schedule, and, because of this, he sleeps in the day and is awake at night.[4] Mesa is also the only villager to live on the western Island of Outset Island and claims that he once saw a glowing tall girl,[5] the Great Fairy resident in the Forest of Fairies. In his House, there is a secret room that can be entered by crawling through a hole under his bed; the only interest of this room is that there is a Treasure Chest containing 20 Rupees.

Nomenclature

Mesa means "table" in Spanish, and it is likely the name is a corruption of his Japanese name マサオ (Masao), a Japanese name which is a combination of "Masa" and a masculine suffix "O". The Japanese name seems a reference for Japanese actor 草刈 正雄 (Kusakari Masao) and a pun with the actor's surname, which literal meaning is "cutting grass", as the map select menu refers to him as 草刈マサオ (Kusakari Masao), which means "Masao the mower".[6]
