The Parry,(BotWBreath of the Wild | TotKTears of the Kingdom)[3][4] also known as the Shield Attack,(TPTwilight Princess)[5] and the Shield Bash,(SSSkyward Sword)[6] is a recurring ability in The Legend of Zelda series.

Overview

Twilight Princess

The Shield Attack is the second Hidden Skill that Link can learn. This Hidden Skill lets Link bash the enemy with his Shield to open their defenses. The Shield Attack can be learned by first finding the Howling Stone located on the trail leading to Death Mountain.[7] Howling at the Howling Stone awakens the White Wolf, who joins in howling with Wolf Link. After howling with the White Wolf, the White Wolf instructs Link to find him while in human form and marks where he will wait on Link's Map.[8] Once Link returns to human form, he can find the White Wolf waiting at the Ordon Spring. Approaching the White Wolf can return Link to the clouded area where he can find the Hero's Spirit and learn the Shield Attack.

To perform the Shield Attack on the GameCube version, Link must get close enough to the enemy while targeting it and then press the R-Button, which will cause the enemy to lower its defense and thus allow Link to attack the foe with another skill, such as the Helm Splitter.[9][2] In the Wii version of Twilight Princess, this Hidden Skill can be executed by thrusting the Nunchuk forward.[10]

Other than bringing the enemy's defenses down, the Shield Attack can also be used to deflect certain enemy projectiles.[10][11]

Skyward Sword

Link can learn the Shield Bash ability after first acquiring a Shield.[12] The Knight Commander, Eagus teaches Link this ability at the Sparring Hall.[13] To perform the Shield Bash, Link must ready his Shield right before an enemy attacks him. The force from his Shield arm will repel the enemy's attack,[14] which does not deplete Durability. The Shield Bash gives Link an opening to strike his opponent.[6] The technique is useful against enemies who throw weapons or refuse to give an opening.[15] Using the Shield Bash to parry an attack requires perfect timing in battle.[16] Link can practice this ability on the Defense-Practice Log in the Sparring Hall.[17]

Breath of the Wild

Link can Parry by readying his Shield and pressing the A button in Breath of the Wild. By Parrying at the right time, Link can execute a Perfect Guard, which will unbalance Enemies and redirect projectiles. Doing so will not damage the Shield.
