The Magical Rod or Magic Rod is a reoccurring weapon in the Zelda series, although it has only appeared in The Legend of Zelda and Link's Awakening, and was likely to have been replaced by the Fire Rod in subsequent games. When used, the Magic Rod releases a fireball which can be used to damage enemies or light torches from far away.

There is also an item called the Book of Magic (バイブル, Bible) which appeared in The Legend of Zelda, and was able to increase the power of the Magical Rod. The Book of Magic has only ever appeared once in the series.

In The Legend of Zelda's first quest, the Magical Rod is found in Level 6, Dragon Labyrinth. In the second quest, it is found in Level 8. The Magical Rod shoots a similar beam to a Wizrobe's projectile.

After gaining the Book of Magic (バイブル, Bible), the Magical Rod's attack leaves a fire effect similar to that of a Red Candle when it makes contact with an enemy or wall, causing more damage. It can be found in Level 8 (Lion Labyrinth) in the first quest, and Level 4 (Snake Labyrinth) in the Second Quest.

Link's Awakening

The Magic Rod is used to expel blasts of magical energy in the form of fireballs, and is the main tool in the final dungeon of Link's Awakening, Turtle Rock. It is primarily used as a weapon and for lighting unreachable torches. The Magic Rod is vital to defeating the dungeon's boss, Hot Head. If Link leaves Eagle's Tower after obtaining the Mirror Shield with the intention of going to Turtle Rock earlier, but before defeating the the boss of Eagle's Tower, the Magic Rod can also act as a very effective weapon against Evil Eagle.

In terms of damage and range, the Magic Rod is the most powerful unaided weapon in Link's Awakening, though there are two circumstances in which it can be potentially surpassed. The Seashell Sword (Level 2 Sword) with a Piece of Power or the Red Tunic can easily match it in terms of raw damage, but Pieces of Power are rare and inconsistent to find and the Red Tunic is only available in Link's Awakening DX. The Boomerang is also very powerful, and does more damage against some enemies (though less against others), and is able to kill some enemies the Magic Rod cannot, but it is an optional weapon which can only be achieved through a lengthy trading sequence, whereas the Magic Rod is an easier-to-find item necessary for the game's completion.

The Magic Rod in Link's Awakening is also notable as one of the only things that can kill a Cucco.[1]
