The Fire Sanctuary is an area that appears in two Zelda games. It is located within the Fire Realm of the re-established kingdom of Hyrule in Spirit Tracks, and it later appears in Skyward Sword near the Eldin Volcano.

Spirit Tracks

Location

The sanctuary is located just behind the Goron Village and is the home dwelling of the realm's Lokomo guardian, Embrose. It is the only sanctuary in Hyrule that doesn't have its own train station on the Rail Map.

Features

Story

After vanquishing Phytops atop the Ocean Temple and restoring the Ocean Temple's energy flow through its Spirit Tracks, Link and Princess Zelda are sent by Anjean to restore the energy flow to the Tower of Spirits from the final temple, the Fire Temple. To reach the temple high atop the realm's mountain however, Link sees that like all the other realms, he must first restore this realm's lost Spirit Tracks as well. After succeeding in recovering the Fire Rail Map from the tower, the pair travel to the Fire Realm to restore the final temple and fully regenerate the Tower of Spirits. Link speaks with Kagoron and uses Mega Ice to fully open the way to the rest of the village through a lava flow.[1] Behind the village, Link navigates his way through dangerous falling boulders and pools of lava to reach a special door called the Door of Friendship,[2] which blocks the way to Embrose's chamber.

Inside, Link meets with Embrose and performs the necessary Lokomo Song with him using the Spirit Flute, restoring the Spirit Tracks that lead to the Fire Temple atop the mountain.

Door of Friendship

Door of Friendship

The Door of Friendship is a door, similar in appearance to all doors in Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks, that blocks the way to Embrose's chamber in the Fire Sanctuary.

To open the door, Link has to solve a puzzle that involves eight heads made of rock that are facing towards different directions. There is a sign nearby that gives Link a clue about how to open the door by telling him a short story. The story is about two men, who both fell in love with the same woman. One of them was always in the center of attention, but the woman was only interested in the other man. The battle for the woman had begun, but the men eventually became friends. This story is a metaphor where the eight heads of rock are the characters in the story. Five of the heads are facing the man who always is in the center of attention, while the two remaining heads are facing each other. They represent the woman and the other man. To open the door, the young hero must play the Song of Light between the two heads (the two men) that are facing the woman, which will make a diamond-shaped crystal appear. The crystal will send a beam of light towards the door and thus, open it.[3]

Skyward Sword

Template:Dungeon

The Fire Sanctuary is the sixth dungeon Link visits in Skyward Sword, located in the extremely hot Volcano Summit of Eldin Volcano. Link ventures inside in order to find the third and final Sacred Flame so that he can temper his sword. The Fire Sanctuary houses Magmanos and the Mogma Mitts.

Entrance to the Sanctuary

The Fire Sanctuary is a large castle-like structure situated across a bridge that is going over a large gorge. In order to protect the riches hidden inside the Sanctuary, three pillars of flames block Link's objective path to the dungeon. The frog statues hanging above the flames have to be given water from Link's Empty Bottles to extinguish the flames. However, this method of dousing the flames is only possible for the first two frog statues. The third frog statue is larger than the two before it, and requires a large quantity of water, more than an Empty Bottle can hold. Link travels to Lake Floria to request the use of the Water Dragon's Basin from the Water Dragon. Upon returning to the base of Eldin Volcano with Scrapper the Ancient Robot, who is carrying the basin, Link is required to travel all the way up to the Fire Sanctuary while protecting Scrapper from the large number of enemies inhabiting the Eldin Volcano region. Reaching the Fire Sanctuary will cause Scrapper to pour the water basin over the frog's tongue and thus clearing the entrance to the Fire Sanctuary.

Themes and Navigation

There are many lava flows similar to those found in the Earth Temple, which Link must cross by using the Slingshot to shoot down Water Fruit hanging over the lava flows,[4] which harden the lava into a safe platform. Navigating the Sanctuary requires changing the currents of lava flows, either in strength or direction, so that Link can have the hardened lava platforms move along with the current. The Fire Sanctuary also introduces getting around the area by tunneling underground with the Mogma Mitts, which Link recieves after helping one of the treasure hunting Mogmas, named Guld, who has been trapped while looking for treasure.[5]

The Fire Sanctuary is famous among Mogmas for its illusory puzzle, which calls upon the courage of adventurers, known as the "Legend of the Sleeping Statue."[6][7]
