Ocarina of Time
In Ocarina of Time, the "Song of Storms" is the only Ocarina song learned by Adult Link, learned from the windmill man. It can summon rain when the song is played, reveal secret grottoes and water bean sprouts to produce fairies. By playing the "Song of Storms" inside the windmill as a child, it will speed up the windmill dramatically, causing the well in Kakariko Village to empty.
Majora's Mask
The "Song of Storms" makes another appearance in Majora's Mask, where its origins are explained. The "Song of Storms" was a song composed by the Composer Brothers of the Ikana Canyon, specifically by Flat. When Link finds Flat's crypt beneath the Ikana Graveyard, Flat teaches it to him; it represents his sadness of losing Sharp, the other Composer Brother, and his anger for Sharp's betrayal.[1] By playing the song in front of Sharp, Link manages to cure Sharp's soul, reviving the Ikana River in the process.
Oracle of Seasons
In Oracle of Seasons, the "Song of Storms" is the background music for the area around the windmill, east of the village in the Eastern Suburbs.
Super Smash Bros. Brawl
The "Song of Storms" also makes an appearance in Super Smash Bros. Brawl as a hidden song for the Pirate Ship stage. It is collaborated with Ganondorf's theme and the "Serenade of Water". Moreover, it is part of the "Ocarina of Time" medley, and it appears alongside other familiar melodies such as "Epona's Song", "Zelda's Lullaby", "Saria's Song", and the "Song of Time."
Music Theory of the Song of Storms
The Song of Storms is in triple time (commonly felt in 6/8) and features a 4-bar intro. The rest of the piece is 11 bars long and looped ad infinitum with the last bar of the 8-bar melodic phrase overlapping with the first bar of the intro (making a phrase analysis of 8 + 3 with the last bar of the 8 also acting as the 'real' first bar of the 3). Even though the piece is only 11 bars long, it uses two different sets of instrumentation to add variety. The first set primarily uses an organ for the melody while the second set uses an accordion and glockenspiel or celeste.
Harmonically, the piece is set in d Dorian with a brief use of B-flat Major.[2]
Trivia
- A time paradox is created in Ocarina of Time: according to the Windmill Man, a child with an ocarina (assumed to be Young Link) played the Song of Storms to speed up the windmill,[3] yet Link is taught the song by the Windmill Man. Because of this, it is not clear exactly how Link originally learned the song to have played it to the Windmill Man in the first place. Another theory is that it was another kid who originally played the song to the Windmill Man, thus the Windmill Man was not talking about Link the first time.
- The Song of Storms can be played to the Fabulous Five Froggish Tenors in Zora's River to gain a Piece of Heart.
