General Wright
General Wright is a character in Echoes of Wisdom.[2]
Biography
General Wright is a Hylian general who is in charge Hyrule's military.[3] Alongside Minister Lefte, he directly serves the King of Hyrule. According to his Soldiers, Wright is a simple man who is drawn to loud noises, like the sound of a Pot being broken.[1]
General Wright can first be encountered in the Throne Room of Hyrule Castle, where he and Minister Lefte are by the King of Hyrule's side. When Princess Zelda returns after her kidnapping, Wright runs up to her and expresses his relief that she has returned.[4] However, he apologizes that neither himself nor Lefte was able to find her.[5] The King of Hyrule tells them not to let their regrets get in the way of their joy, and both Wright and Lefte agree.[6]
As the four of them discuss Rifts, General Wright comments on how terrible it is to be stolen away.[7] He also wonders what has been causing the increased appearances of Rifts.[8] This conversation is interrupted by the arrival of a Soldier, who has come with news about the Rifts.[9] The Soldier informs them that a resident of Suthorn Village has fallen into a Rift, as well as that dark Monsters are attacking people in Hyrule Field.[10] Once he leaves, the King of Hyrule commands General Wright to mobilize his troops to fight off the Monsters.[11] At that moment, a Rift forms on the throne. While the King is able to push Zelda to safety, he, General Wright, and Minister Lefte are all stolen away.
Echoes of the three emerge from the Rift, and the King of Hyrule? calls Soldiers into the room.[12] He accuses Princess Zelda of creating the Rift and orders she be imprisoned, which the false General Wright and Minister Lefte confirm.[13] Zelda is then locked up in the Hyrule Castle Underground as a result.[14]
While Princess Zelda is exploring the Stilled Jabul Waters during the Main Quest "The Jabul Waters Rift", she can find General Wright petrified outside of the Jabul Ruins. Tri recognizes that they are searching for him and assures Zelda he will be restored after they mend the Rift.[15] After the Rift has been fixed, Zelda meets General Wright again at Crossflows Plaza.[16] He approaches Zelda and asks for directions, introducing himself as the general for Hyrule Kingdom.[17] He explains that he was in the sea when he came to his sense, and he was drawn to their location by the music of the Zora.[18] Wright begins to ask for direction to Hyrule Castle, but he stops when he recognizes Zelda.[19] Zelda then lowers the hood of her Disguise and reveals her identity to Wright, who asks what has happened in his absence.[20] He is shocked to hear about what she has been through, and he decides to join Minister Lefte at Lueburry's House.[21] He then runs off to Suthorn Forest.[22]
At Lueburry's House, General Wright expresses his gratitude to Princess Zelda for saving him, and he explains that Minister Lefte has explained everything that has happened.[23] He then wonders where the King of Hyrule could be, since Lefte was found in Suthorn Forest and he was found in Jabul Waters.[24]
Nomenclature
Wright is a British surname that came from the old English wyrhta , which means "maker".[25] The name is also likely a corruption of "right". As the name states, Wright is seen standing on the King of Hyrule's right.
Wright's Japanese name, "Ugi", is likely the combination of "u" and "migi", the readings of the kanji "右", which means right.[26]
