Rifts are Objects in Echoes of Wisdom.[1]

Overview

Rifts are voids created by Null in an attempt to return the world to a state of nothingness.[2] Terrain and Objects consumed by Rifts are drawn into the Still World, where they slowly fade away.[3] Creatures and people that fall into Rifts become completely immobile as they begin to fade, a state which is referred to as "stolen away".[4] Tecuums sometimes appear from Rifts and patrol the area, chasing down foes and spawning dark Monsters after reaching them. Rifts act as a barrier, preventing anything from passing over or under them.

Rifts are repaired by the Tris, who use their Echo ability to recreate all the land and Objects consumed by a Rift. Any Creatures or people that fell into the Rift are restored at the same time. Those that return from being stolen away usually lose a part of themselves, such as their voice.[5] When a Rift is repaired, powerful Items called Might Crystals appear. These can be used to forge weapons that are effective against the dark Monsters spawned by Teccums.[6]

After Link defeats the dark Echo of Ganon at the beginning of Echoes of Wisdom, large Rifts begin to appear across Hyrule. Due to Null's interference, the Tris are unable to repair the new Rifts. Zelda's companion Tri is able to create entrances at certain spots on larger Rifts. The pair use these to enter Rifts and free the Tris trapped within, allowing them to work with Tri to repair the Rifts.

  4. See, I spend my time researching Hyrule's history and its rifts. For ages now, rifts have appeared, and sometimes folks have ended up in them. Those unfortunate enough to be pulled into a rift vanished without a trace... After which townsfolk would say they'd been stolen away. Anyhow, Link made it his mission to fight the monsters that come crawling out of the rifts. He also tried to prevent folks from going missing. And I've been helping as I'm able too. Which's why I made him a sword—one that's effective against the rift monsters. — Lueburry (Echoes of Wisdom)
  5. I was nearly attacked by a monster in the forest, when a young man named Link rescued me. Folks in Suthorn Village tell me that Link was among a group of kids who were stolen away. These kids made it back somehow though! Remarkable. All of the kids who were taken by rifts have lost something. For Link, he lost the ability to speak. Despite all he has been through, he fights to keep others safe. His bravery has moved me deeply. Then it hit me! This young man would be the best person to entrust the Sword of Might to! I do believe I can support him in his efforts. Tomorrow, I'll visit Suthorn Village again. — Lueburry's Diary (Echoes of Wisdom)
