Mogmas are a highly civilized mole tribe featured in Skyward Sword. They live on Eldin Volcano and have the ability to dig into and out of the ground. They are friendly toward Link and claim to always honor their debts, but are also somewhat greedy and enjoy Rupees and other treasures.

History

When Link arrives at Eldin Volcano, he learns that Bokoblins are invading Mogma villages, and he must get rid of them in order to enter the temple. After Link defeats a colony of Bokoblins for Tyto, he gives the young hero the Digging Mitts in gratitude. When Link arrives at the Earth Temple, he overhears Ledd and Cobal talking about a key that will open the gate to the temple, but the key had been broken into five pieces and hidden by Bokoblins.[1] As Link requires the key to enter the temple, he must use Fi's dowsing abilities to find the pieces and dig them up.

Notable Mogmas

Ledd

Ledd is a red-haired Mogma who first encounters Link while preparing to ambush oncoming Bokoblins. He appears to show concern for Cobal and Link's missing friend. He gives Link his Bomb Bag after the young hero retrieves it from two Lizalfos who he had fled from. He is named after lead.

He has an affinity for the sky, and wishes to go to it.[6] Later, Link must take Guld to the sky to help work in the fields at the Lumpy Pumpkin. He is named after gold.

If Link sits on the stool in one of the Bokoblin "houses" in the underground caves of Eldin Volcano, Kortz will humorously welcome Link to his new home while justifying why it is his new house. However Kortz will admit he just wants to know what it is like to say "Welcome to my place!"[10] If Link sits on the same stool for a second time Kortz will warn Link to keep the house clean and not to "roll around", alluding to how if Link rolls into some of the structures on the walls inside the "house" a rupee may pop out. Said structures can also be found by Dowsing for Rupees.

Plats is the brother of Bronzi and Silva and a member of Guld's treasure hunting group within the Fire Sanctuary. Link encounters him underground, where Plats mistakes him for a Bokoblin and decides to have "fun" with him.[11] To catch him, Link must trap him by causing him to go in Link's direction. After he is caught, he will notice Link is wearing Silva's Mogma Gloves and give him a chest with a Piece of Heart inside.[12][13]

After Eldin Volcano erupts and Link is captured by Bokoblins while looking for the Fire Dragon Eldin, Plats steals Link's Mogma Mitts from the Bokoblins and returns them to Link so the young hero can escape his imprisonment. He later appears telling Link that the Bokoblins took all of his items so he updates Link's map to show the location of his lost items. Plats warns Link not to let the Bokoblins spot him and leaves to rummage for treasure. He is named after platinum.

Trivia

The mole creature in Ancient Stone Tablets
The mole creature in Ancient Stone Tablets
  • A large mole creature similar to a Mogma previously appeared in Ancient Stone Tablets. When discovered on the overworld by the Hero of Light, this creature will travel to another location and dig a network of tunnels leading to many Treasure Chests containing Rupees.
  • "Mogma" may be a portmanteau of the Japanese word for mole, Template:Japanese, and "magma". Additionally, Mogmas also have additional facial features resembling dogs, and their name can also be a portmanteau of "dog" and "magma".
  • Most Mogmas are named after metals or minerals, with the exception of Tubert.
  • Mogmas tend to mistake Link for a Bokoblin upon first inspection; this may be based off of the fact that moles, in real life, have generally terrible eyesight.
  • In the French Canadian version of the game, Nackle's and Tyto's names ("Nick" and "Titam") are interchanged.
