General Rules? - the player is refered to "the player" in TV-player intaraction (if it's allowed) - the player is refered to "Link" in GBA control - use "competitors" to include Tingle and use "Links" to exclude Tingle

fix for the main draft

Story

Tetra has set up a trial where Link has to collect Pirate's Medals to test if Link is worthy of a full-grown pirate. Three members of Tetra's Pirate Crew have disguised look like Link to compete with him fairly [1].

(rewrote to match the manual's story)

Gameplay

While the setting of the mode is based on The Wind Waker, the gameplay is similar to the other game modes. The objective of Navi Trackers is to run through the courses, which come in various themes, and collect Pirate’s Medals from the characters on the map in numerical order in nine minutes. The gameplay takes place on the Game Boy Advance screen, while the whole map appears on the TV screen. On the course, six characters are holding flags with numbers that are the same as the number on the medal they will give. In the expert courses, the numbers of the flags are all hidden. The map on the TV screen shows where the characters are located, but the number the of flags is only seen on the Game Boy Advance screen.

(there are only five characters in each groups! I can't even count numbers)

There are a total of 99 numbered medals to be collected, after which a Course Crown medal appears. The session will end early once the Course Crown is taken. The group of six characters come in four variants that correspond to the course chosen to play. In the beginning of a session, one of the characters is randomly chosen as the bonus character, and the medals they give are valued twice as much as regular medals.

Talking to the character when the icon flashes with a red color and spiky effect also provides one extra medal for free. The bonus character always has the red icon and gives extra medals.

(added the detail about the bonus character)

Development

Navi Trackers, originally titled Tetra's Trackers[2], was based on the BS Marvelous: Time Athletic and BS Marvelous: Camp Arnold Broadcast Satellite games based on Marvelous: Another Treasure Island, in which players collected stamps while listening to the audio navigation that is represented as a radio broadcast. This transmission was replaced with a connectivity function, and the navigator was replaced with Tetra, and her pirate crew make appearances.[3] The director of Navi Trackers, Yoshinori Tsuchiyama is involved in the development of all three titles of Marvelous as an artist.

(replaced ULR with an archived one and made the title a whole translation)

  • Instead of Medals, stamps are collected instead. According to an interview, the change happened in the later stages of development. [4]

(replaced ULR with an archived one and made the title a whole translation)

Legacy

  • Earlier than Breath of the Wild, Navi Trackers features full voice acting that is played along with animation and lip-syncing in Japanese. Randomly occurring rain is also present that extinguishes fires on the field.

(made it exclude the CD-i trilogy)

Trivia

Four Swords Adventures

Hyrulean Adventure

FSA Green Link.png

Concerned that the seal which keeps Vaati in the Four Sword may be weakening, Princess Zelda and the rest of the Seven Maidens summon Link and open the way to the shrine of the Four Sword to investigate. However, Princess Zelda and the other maidens are captured and imprisoned by Shadow Link. Despite the fact that it will release Vaati, Link is forced to draw the Four Sword from its pedestal in order to split himself into four and have the strength to go and rescue the maidens. The Links save all seven of them and collect the four Royal Jewels, which they use to reveal the Tower of Winds. And defeating Vaati, Zelda and the Links fought against the dark lord Ganon and, with the help of the Seven Maidens, seal him within the Four Sword and restored peace to Hyrule. The sword is then returned to its sanctuary and sealed there, and the Links are combined into one again.

This incarnation of Link is given the title "Hero of Light," due to the hero's courage and being the only one who can free Hyrule from darkness.[7]

Navi Trackers

In Navi Trackers, Link in the green clothes is not the same individual from Hyrulean Adventure but from The Wind Waker, who is accompanying Tetra and her crew on her ship. However, the placement of Navi Trackers in The Wind Waker relevant timeline is unknown. In the opening cutscene, the other three Links are introduced, and the manual states they are Tetra's Pirate Crew in disguise [8]. They are never seen or mentioned in The Wind Waker.

Tetra

Four Swords Adventures

In the Japanese and Korean versions of Four Swords Adventures, Tetra appears in the Navi Trackers mode. She tests Link to make him a full-grown pirate [9].

Tetra is assigned the role of navigator, guiding players by providing instructions and updates on the current situation. She is described as “despite her strong-willed look, she's kindhearted and gives players hints” on the select screen. As the description says, she’s the only navigator who makes the size of medals on the map big to small by numerical order. She also displays the location of the first medal on the map. Tetra refers to players without any honorific, the same as the way she refers to Link in The Wind Waker. [10]

Sue-Belle

Four Swords Adventures

In the Japanese and Korean versions of Four Swords Adventures, Sue-Belle appears in the Navi Trackers mode as one of the navigators who is unlocked by collecting 8 Secret Seashells and guiding players by providing instructions and updates on the current situation.

Sue-Belle is described as “a sweet big sister figure” [11], and unlike her appearance in The Wind Waker, she speaks in an overly flirtatious tone. Her reactions toward the player who's not doing well are fully reassuring compared to the other two navigators, whose reactions are more mixed with warning. The description also says “find the contents of the pots and get more medals”. When she is the navigator, players could find green and blue Lucky Stars in the pots on the course. She has an extra line to greet her neighbors and relatives if the player choose the maps which have Outset Island folks for the character set.[12] Sue-Belle refers to players with さん (-san) honorific.

  • Sue-Belle is seen as her updated design from Navi Trackers in one of the promotional screenshot of The Wind Waker HD.
  • Sue-Belle hums the background music of Outset Island in one of her idle animations.

The King of Red Lions

The King of Red Lions

In the Japanese and Korean versions of Four Swords Adventures, The King of Red Lions appears in the Navi Trackers mode as one of the navigators who is unlocked by collecting 8 Secret Seashells and guiding players by providing instructions and updates on the current situation.

The King of Red Lions is described as “usually he's intimidating, but once he's in a good mood, he’d give players items generously” [13]. When he is the navigator, players could find better-graded Lucky Stars from treasure chests during extended Lucky Time, and the rate of finding increases more in the second extended Lucky Time. He refers to players with 僧 (-zou) honorific, which is a shortened form of 小僧 (lad).

Tingle

Four Swords Adventures

Hyrulean Adventure

FSA Tingle Artwork.png

In Hyrulean Adventure, Tingle collects Force Gems. Throughout the game, anytime Link finds a big Force Gem outside of dungeons, Tingle will also try to get it. If Link picks up the Force Gem first, he will retreat. Link can also shoot an Arrow at Tingle to slow him down. Tingle also tries to pick up the huge Force Gems, but his balloon can not carry them.

Tingle posts signs throughout the stages called the Tingle Times, which tell a story of an experience Tingle had in the area, offering insight to his childish nature. Tingle also runs the Tingle's Tower, a multiplayer mini-game gallery that can be accessed by progressing through the Hyrulean Adventure mode.

Navi Trackers

Tingle also appears in the Japanese and Korean exclusive mode Navi Trackers mode as the competitor when only one player is joined to play, and the player can adjust the difficulty, which is called Tingle Power. He passes all obstacles.

  • When the player defeats Tingle in all twelve courses with the highest difficulty, Tingle gives the player a Knight's Crest, which with the face of Tingle on it instead of the bird symbol as a sign of completion. He also gives the player a kiss for the celebration [14].

Fairy

Four Swords Adventures

Navi Trackers

In Navi Trackers, fairies give Links valuable items that provide extra points at the end of the game session. The first fairy appears when competitors get 5 Pirate Medals in total, and other fairies appear after every 10 medals are obtained.

Pirate's Charm

In Navi Trackers, Pirate's Charm is one of the items obtained from the Template:PluralOpening Game and Treasure Chests. Links can communicate with the navigator on Pirate's Charm and ask the navigator to display the location of the next medal on the map, display the location ofTreasure Chests on the map, or ask them to give the player rupees. The navigator will drop one purple rupee when the player asks them for rupees.

Pegasus Shoes

In Navi Trackers, Pegasus Boots is one of the items obtained from the Template:PluralOpening Game and Treasure Chests. Links can take advantage during the game session by using Pegasus Boots to run faster or charge into trees to let them drop items.

Roc's Feather

In Navi Trackers, Roc's Feather is one of the items obtained from the Template:PluralOpening Game and Treasure Chests. Links can take advantage during the game session by using Pegasus Boots to jump over impassable floors or the floors that make him slow down.

Magic Hammer

In Navi Trackers, Magic Hammer is one of the items obtained from the Template:PluralOpening Game and Treasure Chests. Links can take advantage during the game session by using Pegasus Boots to peg down the stakes or hit their competitors. Hitting the other Link makes him drop a bunch of rupees, and hitting Tingle makes him blown away to the starting point.

Super Hummer

Super Hummer is a one-time enhancement for Magic Hammer. It replaces the regular Magic Hammer for Super Hummer, and Links can cause an earthquake by hitting the ground to attack every other Links indirectly. 【will Tingle affected by earthquakes?】

Secret Seashell

Similar to Link's Awakening, Secret Seashell in Navi Trackers rewards the player with new features when a certain amount of them are collected. It is hidden in the courses, and each course has one Secret Seashell.

Unlockable Features
Number of Collected Secret Seashells Reward
1 Activates Lucky Star Roulette
2 Adds the reward that gives Link who activated the fifth Surprise Switch on the course a Blue Lucky Star
3 Unlocks Sue-Belle
4 Four Star Ghosts begin to appear on the course
5 Improve the reward of Lucky Star Roulette from a Yellow Lucky Star to a Red Lucky Star
6 Improve the reward of the fifth Surprise Switch from a Yellow Lucky Star to a Red Lucky Star
8 Unlocks the King of Red Lions
10 Fifth Star Ghost begins to appear on the course
12 Unlocks the Experts Mode

Shovel

In Navi Trackers, Magic Hammer is one of the items obtained from the Template:PluralOpening Game and Treasure Chests. Links can take advantage during the game session by using Shovel digging pit traps. 【will Tingle affected by pit traps?】

Pot

In Navi Trackers, pots will drop rupees when they are broken by being slammed with a hammer or thrown at the ground. Choosing Sue-Belle for the navigator will add Green and Blue Lucky Stars to the possible drops of pots. Link can throw a pot at the other Link to reduce his visibility. When a pot is put on Link, he can’t see the background of the course.

Pot of Misfortune

Pot of Misfortune is a consumable version of pots. that puts a pot on Link who has more points than the user automatically.

Lucky Star

Lucky Stars are items in NT. In NT, having a Lucky Star in the inventory lets the characters on the course give Link multiple Pirate’s Medals at once. The multiplicative effect is defined by the number put on the Lucky Star, and the oldest one the player got is always applied.

All Five

When Link obtains an All Five, the empty slots are filled with Red Lucky Stars, which give Link the possibility of obtaining 20 Pirate’s Medals at once at maximum.

the guidebook I own doesn't cover All Five, but I saw Tetra mention it in a LP video

Rupee

Navi Trackers is the only mode that features rupees in the tree modes in the Japanese and Korean versions of Four Swords Adventures.

Types of Rupee
Rupee Value
Green Rupee 1

Story (from the manual)

On a small island, in the Great Sea.
"Hey! Are you guys ready?"
Tetra calls her pirate crew from the top of a small platform.
The crew all over the island respond to her, flags in their hands.

“Miss! I’m ready!”
“Is this the right place, Miss?”
“I’m here, Miss! Can you see me?”

“Well, my guys are doing good. Now just wait for Link to... Hey, he’s coming.”

Link followed the pirates, and then the three boys jumped out of nowhere and surprised him. The boys are exactly like him, wearing the same clothes as him but in red, blue, and purple.

"Link, the guys are my swabbies. Today, I'll give you a test to make you a pirate. Compete with them. They're dressed like you, so my other swabbies can't go easy on their matey. Aren't they identical to you? If you understand what’s going on, hurry to the starting point! The trial will begin soon!”

Interview

Tsuchiyama: In the planning stage, I came up with an idea similar to an automotive navigation system. The idea was that a woman sitting on the passenger seat would guide you and do commentaries, but I wanted to aim for a broader audience, having various types of voices each of them could have fun with. There was also a feature where the player and the navigator could talk to each other. The feature was omitted since we decided that just getting called by name [from the navigator] was fun enough. The game became the current version after many choices were made.

N.O.M: We heard that a large portion of the contents were changed from the first plan.

Tsuchiyama: The collective item was the stamps until recently. It was changed when we discussed how we should shape the game to match the style of Zelda. The pirates' medals would fit more, as something you'll get from pirates.

Aonuma: Miyamoto firmly said “if you change that [the collective item], the whole mood of the game would change”. Though it may seem a small detail, the change makes the system totally fit in the aesthetic. Changing one core feature means we need to change other things as well, from the re-recording of the voices to everything. Still, we agreed it'd be worth the effort...
