If you place the stone slab fragment into the stone slab, you will be able to get a hint about how to conquer the dungeon.

Stone Slabs are tablets that can be found in every Dungeon on Koholint Island. Each Slab resides on a wall and holds a message, but cannot be read because a part of it is missing.[2] Link must explore the Dungeon until he finds a Treasure Chest containing the missing Stone Slab Fragment. He can then return the Fragment to the Slab, revealing a hint about a Puzzle, an Enemy, a Guardian, or the Dungeon Boss.

In Link's Awakening DX and the Nintendo Switch remake, they are replaced by Owl Statues.
