"In the Midst of Despair..." is a Movie in Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity.[1]

Overview

"In the Midst of Despair..." plays following the completion of the "Calamity Strikes" Scenario.

From the Passeri Greenbelt, Zelda, Impa, and Link watch as Guardians emerge from the Giant Columns and Calamity Ganon encircles Hyrule Castle. Zelda drops the Sheikah Slate, which the Diminutive Guardian sees and attempts to draw her attention to. Impa takes the Sheikah Slate, finding Pictures of the Divine Beasts overtaken by Calamity Ganon.[2][3] In shock, Zelda falls to her knees, announces she has failed, and begins to cry.[4] She laments being unable to save King Rhoam and the Champions, wondering why her power has failed to awaken.[5]

The Diminutive Guardian once again plays its rendition of "Zelda's Lullaby" to comfort Zelda. She continues crying, stating that all of her effort was for nothing.[6] One of her tears falls on the eye of the Guardian, which begins to emit a bright Light.[2] It repeats the same tune it played to open the Gate of Time in "Across Time", shooting a beam into the air that splits into four pieces. After the Light fades, it returns to normal.

Divine Beast Vah Medoh's cry can be heard, and Impa directs everyone's attention to it.[7] Although it is afflicted by Malice, Vah Medoh still glows blue, indicating that the Champions are still in control of their Divine Beasts. Zelda is shocked, and Impa urges her that they can still do something.[8] Link agrees with a nod, following Impa and the Diminutive Guardian as the travel south. After steeling herself, Zelda joins them.

Trivia

  • "In the Midst of Despair..." resembles the Recovered Memory "Despair" from Breath of the Wild. In the Recovered Memory, Zelda similarly laments being unable to save her father and the Champions following the Great Calamity.[9] However, the two cutscenes take place in different locations. Unlike what is depicted during "In the Midst of Despair...", "Despair" does not feature Impa and Terrako, and Zelda does not have the hope of reclaiming the Divine Beasts.
