"Despair" is the sixteenth Recovered Memory in Breath of the Wild.[1]

Overview

"Despair" can be unlocked in a small stretch of woods northeast of the Bottomless Swamp. Link is required to view it as part of the Main Quest "Captured Memories".[2]

The Recovered Memory opens up with Link running through the woods north of the Bottomless Swamp, holding onto Zelda's wrist. It is Raining, and the two of them are covered in mud. Zelda suddenly slips, falling from Link's grasp. Kneeling on the ground, Zelda asks how it came to this.[3] She reveals that Calamity Ganon has turned all of the Ancient Technology, including the Divine Beasts and the Guardians against them.[4] Because of this, the Champions have become trapped in their Divine Beasts, confirming that they have died.[5] Zelda believes it is all her fault, since she was unable unlock her sealing power.[6]

Crying, Zelda states that everything she has done up until now has all been for nothing, and she calls herself a failure.[7] Zelda laments that she has failed her friends, Hyrule, and her father, leaving them all to die.[8] With another sob, Zelda falls into Link's arms. He holds her, and the Recovered Memory ends with the sounds of her cries.

Trivia

  • How Zelda cries in "Despair" differs between the Japanese and English versions of Breath of the Wild. In the Japanese version. her cries consist of screaming and wailing. However, in the English version, it is a quieter sobbing, albeit slightly audible.
  • The Movie "In the Midst of Despair..." from Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity resembles "Despair". During the Movie, Zelda mourns her inability to prevent the Great Calamity and save Rhoam Bosphoramus Hyrule and the Champions, just as she does in "Despair".[9] The two cutscenes have several differences, however. For example, they take place in different locations, Impa and Terrako are present during "In the Midst of Despair...", and the Divine Beasts have not been completely overtaken in Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity.[10]
