Memories,(LANS | TotK)[1][name references needed] also known as Recovered Memories(BotW)[2] are a recurring mechanic in The Legend of Zelda series.

Breath of the Wild

After undergoing a century-long rejuvenation process in the Shrine of Resurrection, Link's Memory is fragmented. Throughout the events of Breath of the Wild, Link slowly regains his Memory as certain locations or objects spark his recollection. There are a total of 18 Memories and they can be Recovered in any order. Link can view the Memories again in the Sheikah Slate's Adventure Log after recovering them. The majority of Link's Memories are Recovered by visiting the locations shown in the 12 photos found on the Sheikah Slate's album. These photos were captured by Zelda 100 years ago. In addition, Link recalls a Memory during each of the four Divine Beast Main Quests and recalls a Memory after obtaining the Master Sword. After visiting the 12 locations from the photos in the Sheikah Slate album and regaining the Memories associated, Impa will show Link a picture that depicts the location of his final Memory of his past with Princess Zelda.[3] Recovering this final Memory completes the "Captured Memories" Main Quest. Zelda then tells Link through telepathy that he has Recovered all of his Memories of him and Zelda and that it is time to defeat Calamity Ganon.[4] Completing the "Captured Memories" Main Quest will also unlock a post-credits scene after defeating Calamity Ganon.

The Champions' Ballad DLC Pack adds five EX Recovered Memories that take place before the other Recovered Memories. Link is able to visualize the first four EX Recovered Memories after listening to a Song that is sung by Kass to honor one of the Champions that piloted a Divine Beast when Link completes a Main Quest related to the Trials that Champion faced. Link remembers the final EX Recovered Memory after listening to the Champions' Ballad, the Unfinished Song by Kass's teacher that Kass later completes.

Divine Beast Vah Ruta Zelda visits the Zora princess, Mipha, and enlists her to pilot the Divine Beast Vah Ruta. While teaching her brother Sidon to swim up waterfalls, Mipha entrusts him with the duty of the Zora royal family, displaying her dedication as both princess and sister.

Champion Urbosa's Song
Divine Beast Vah Naboris Zelda entreats Urbosa, the Gerudo chief, to pilot the Divine Beast Vah Naboris. After Urbosa formally accepts, the two companions take a nighttime stroll in the desert, and Urbosa shares cherished memories from their shared past.

Great Plateau Link, Mipha, Daruk, Revali, and Urbosa are called to Hyrule Castle and formally appointed as Champions by the king. After the ceremony, they congregate at the castle's garden where Mipha asks Zelda for a favor...to use the Sheikah Slate's Camera for a special picture.

Kara Kara Bazaar Zelda is attacked by members of the Yiga Clan. She attempts to escape, but to no avail. At the last moment, Link appears and saves her.

Northeast path from Woodland Stable Zelda explains to Link that in order to properly fulfill his role, he needs to exercise caution. She then expresses her unease about the growing numbers and types of monsters that have been seen recently in Hyrule.

Northeast from the Royal Ancient Lab Ruins Zelda shows Link some of the rare types of wildlife in Hyrule. She explains her admiration for a flower called the silent princess. She also catches something unexpected and inspiring!

Zora's Domain Mipha quietly expresses her concern for Link while tending to his wounds atop the Divine Beast. She reassures Link that he can count on her in the upcoming trials ahead.

West from the Deya Village Ruins While Zelda and Link seek refuge from the rain beneath a tree, she opens up to Link about her own doubts and the choices she has made.

Northeast from the Bottomless Swamp Four of the Champions, King Rhoam, and everyone inside the castle lose their lives when Ganon takes control of the Divine Beast and the Guardians. Link suffers an unfortunate fate fighting Calamity Ganon alongside Zelda.

Ash Swamp Link continues to fight, protecting Zelda from a pack of pursuing Guardians, but collapses in exhaustion, terribly wounded. As the Guardians close in, Zelda stands against them and finally unleashes her sealing power.

North Hyrule Plain After disappearing into the depths under the castle, Zelda wakes up and meets two strangers who introduce themselves as King Rauru and Queen Sonia. She's left startled by a suspicion that she's heard those names before.

An Unfamiliar World
Tabantha Hills Looking out across the world she's found herself in, Zelda realizes she's traveled to the ancient past and questions how she can get back to her own time. Sonia offers some helpful thoughts, but it's Rauru who realizes his older sister, Mineru, might know a way Zelda can travel forward in time.

Mineru's Counsel
Trilby Valley After examining the Purah Pad, Mineru accepts that Zelda is from a different time and explains the only way she might get to the future is by using draconification. It's a forbidden act, however, because Zelda would need to sacrifice her sense of self. Raru tells a disappointed Zelda to speak with Sonia and learn more about her power over time itself.

The Gerudo Assault
Batrea Lake The Gerudo chief, Ganondorf, in his push to conquer Hyrule, uses a swarm of Molduga to assault the castle. When Rauru uses his powers to unleash an attack that destroys the swarm, Ganondorf notices the Zonai secret stone on Rauru's right hand. The sight of it draws a sinister smile from Ganondorf.

A Show of Fealty
Sapphia's Table Invited before the court of Hyrule, Ganondorf kneels before King Rauru and pledges his fealty—while concealing a smile that says otherwise. Still, Zelda is uneasy, and tells Rauru that she's certain the chief has treachery on his mind. Rauru assures her that he's been fully aware of it.

Zelda and Sonia
Illumeni Plateau When Zelda speaks with Sonia to learn how to use her own time powers, she's surprised by the queen's techniques. Sonia then speaks with Zelda about everything she must be struggling with, and the princess then mentions Link. Rauru has never heard of him before, and as Zelda explains who he is, her faith in her friend and hero shines.

Sonia Is Caught by Treachery
Gogobi Shores Sonia meets with Zelda in private, and when the princess is revealed to be a creature under Ganondorf's control, Sonia and the real Zelda address the threat with confidence. The false Zelda laughs eerily and vanishes in a mist of gloom. In that moment, Ganondorf steps up behind Sonia and catches the queen by surprise. She falls victim to the scheme.

Birth of the Demon King
North Tabantha Snowfield With the secret stone he took from Sonia, Ganondorf turns into the Demon King. The gloom that issues from his body creates countless monsters that howl across the world. Rauru goes to Sonia's side to help his fallen queen. Though furious at Ganondorf, he knows the Demon King is too powerful to confront at that moment. He retreats with Zelda.

The Demon King's Army
Hyrule Castle Having turned into the Demon King, Ganondorf uses his terrifying power to cover the world in gloom and send his army of monsters across Hyrule, attacking the peoples of all territories who oppose him.

The Sages' Vow
Talus Plateau Backed into a corner by the attacks in all parts of Hyrule, leaders facing the Demon King's forces gather at Rauru's call. He gives each a Zonai secret stone, making them sages with powers amplified by the stones. All of the sages raise their voices as one, pledging to fight with King Rauru to the end.

A King's Duty
Mount Faloraa On the eve of battle, Zelda tells Rauru that in her future, she's seen that the Demon King is alive, and that it means they won't defeat him the next day. Rauru says that he will still do what he must, even at the cost of his life. If they fail, their last line of defense will be the knight in the future, who wields the sword that seals the darkness.

The Imprisoning War
Spirit Temple In the battle against Demon King Ganondorf, King Rauru realizes that he and his allies have found themselves in a fatal moment. Knowing he is at fault for Ganondorf's rise in Hyrule and for the theft of the secret stone, Rauru risks his life to imprison the tyrant.

A Master Sword in Time
Deplian Badlands South As Zelda worries about the Demon King breaking free in the future, a decayed Master Sword appears before her, delivering the news to Zelda that Link is safe in her time. This helps Zelda realize the reason behind her traveling to the ancient days of Hyrule—she finally knows what she must do.

Critical Decisions
Spirit Temple Zelda informs Mineru that she has come up with a plan to restore the Master Sword by performing an act that Mineru herself has said is expressly forbidden. It will consume Zelda's sense of self, but the princess insists that she will make this ultimate sacrifice. Mineru is gravely opposed, but promises to help to the best of her abilities.

Tears of the Dragon
Rist Peninsula After leaving the Purah Pad in Mineru's care, Zelda swallows the secret stone, holding a hope for Link's future in her heart. As bright light washes over her, Zelda transforms into the Light Dragon, roaring as she ascends into the sky. Tears fall from her eyes and rain from the heavens as the Light Dragon vanishes into an expanse of clouds.

Zelda's Wish
Light Dragon Zelda clutches the decayed Master Sword close to her chest and calls to Link, hoping that the sword, which she's suffusing with new power, can find a way to him somehow.

Trivia

  • In both Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, watching a Memory from the Sheikah Slate or Purah Pad will advance the game by one frame, rather than staying completely paused. This means that Enemies behaviors, physics, characters, and other subjects in the overworld will act as if the game is not paused for one frame. In addition, certain events during this frame are disabled, such as triggering a cutscene or taking damage. This is often used to perform glitches involving frame-perfect actions.
