"A Master Sword in Time" is a Memory in Tears of the Kingdom.[1]

Overview

Link must view "A Master Sword in Time" as part of "The Dragon's Tears" Main Quest.[2] Its respective Dragon's Tear can be found hidden within the Geoglyph in Deplian Badlands South.

In the Temple of Time, Zelda reflects on the Imprisoning War,[3] and flashbacks to Rauru sealing Demon King Ganondorf during "The Imprisoning War" and Link fighting him during "The Awakening". She is uncertain that Link is capable of defeating the Demon King.[4] Suddenly, Zelda's Secret Stone begins to glow, leading her to the back of the Temple of Time. She sees a light hovering above the pedestal in the back, and when she approaches it, the Decayed Master Sword appears before her.[5]

Taking the Decayed Master Sword into her hands, Zelda begins to wonder where it came from.[6] The voice inside the Master Sword speaks to Zelda, informing her that Link is safe in the Era of the Wilds and that it has traveled to the past to recover its strength with her.[7] Flashbacks to "The Awakening", "The Master Sword's Power", "Zelda and Sonia", "Mineru's Counsel", and "A King's Duty" happen rapidly, and Zelda recalls Rauru's belief that there was a reason she came to the Era of Myth.[8]

Looking down at the Decayed Master Sword, Zelda realizes the role she can play in defeating Demon King Ganondorf.[9] She remembers Mineru's explanation of draconification,[10] and she accepts that the process will permanently change her.[11] Turning her gaze to the Sky, Zelda wishes for Link to find her in the future.[12] Afterwards, the Memory will end.

Trivia

  • In the background, a Shrine of Light can be seen in the same position as the Owa Daim Shrine from Breath of the Wild. During the events of Tears of the Kingdom, the Great Plateau South Chasm is found there.
  • The part of "A Master Sword in Time" where Zelda receives the Decayed Master Sword can be seen when Link places it into the light behind the Temple of Time.
  • When the Decayed Master Sword speaks to Zelda, both Fi's signature sound effect and "Fi's Theme" can be heard.
  • Zelda's line that Link may not be able to defeat Demon King Ganondorf can be heard in the February 2023 trailer for Tears of the Kingdom.[13] Other parts of the Memory are present throughout the April 2023 trailer.[14]
