A game mechanic is a particular way in which the player interacts with a game. It can be an ability (e.g. Cooking), an interface (e.g. Map Screen), or a recurring concept such as a Boss, Dungeon, Quest, etc.

Instances of a particular mechanic are not mechanics themselves. Dungeons in general are a mechanic, but the Fire Temple is not a mechanic.
