The World Level is a recurring mechanic in The Legend of Zelda series.[1][2]

Overview

Breath of the Wild



The World Level is the overall condition determining the quality of Items that appear in Treasure Chests and what Enemies appear through the Enemy Progression system. Some Enemies add a hidden value which is added to the overall World Level when they are defeated. Items and Enemies each have specific thresholds which cause them to be replaced by stronger counterparts when these thresholds are met. Some Enemies, such as the Lynel atop Ploymus Mountain, are unaffected by the World Level and will not change under any circumstances. Additionally, instead of changing into different Items, Items may instead receive stronger Weapon Bonuses. The effects of the World Level are unrelated to Blood Moons and can be seen without one occurring.[1]

After 10 of a specific Enemy type and rank have been defeated, they will no longer yield any Experience. For example, the maximum amount of Experience that can be gained from defeating Fire Wizzrobes is 50. It is still possible to accumulate Experience points from the Ice-based equivalent Ice Wizzrobes and the more powerful Meteo Wizzrobes independently from this, however. The exceptions to this include Dark Beast Ganon and Monk Maz Koshia, who only award Experience the first time they are defeated. The Phantom Ganons also only award Experience when defeated for the first time in their respective Divine Beasts, and Phantom Ganons fought in the Illusory Realm or inside the Sanctum at Hyrule Castle will not yield any Experience when defeated. In the base game, the maximum number of Experience points that Link can earn is 13,150. Including Downloadable Content, Link can earn a maximum of 16,700 Experience points. The maximum threshold for Enemy Progression sits at 6,285.7, which corresponds with the appearance of Golden Lynels in Hyrule.

Though Enemies yield a set amount of Experience upon defeat and impact both Enemies and Items, the World Level conditions for growth are applied at different rates for Enemy Progression and Item progression. A single Experience point contributes a total of 1.4% toward Enemy Progression and 1.2% toward Item progression, respectively. In order to initiate the first change to Enemies through the World Level, Link must exceed a total of 285.7 Experience yield. The minimum possible value that exceeds that total is equivalent to two Fire Wizzrobes (10),[note 1] three Decayed Guardians (36), and two Silver Lynels (240). These collectively add up to a total of 286 Experience, resulting in the corresponding red-colored Bokoblins found throughout Hyrule to change into Blue Bokoblins.

Tears of the Kingdom

The World Level system in Tears of the Kingdom functions in much the same way as in Breath of the Wild, with a few notable changes[3]:

  • Dungeon Bosses can technically only award experience for being defeated twice, instead of ten times(however, the in-dungeon versions can only be fought once, so they functionally cap at one defeat.)
  • There is a new "Skill System" that awards bonus experience for performing certain actions during combat:
The maximum skill experience for an enemy type is capped at its current kill experience, meaning that for most enemies, the maximum experience you can earn is 20 times the amount awarded for a single kill (10 defeats + 10 defeats-equivalent of skill experience.) The in-dungeon versions of the Bosses also receive a nerf to skill experience, so only 10% of the normal experience is awarded per action.
