This massive monster swims beneath the desert's sand. It spends most of its time submerged, but if it senses sound, it will breach the surface to feast on whatever it can grab. Running around carelessly can be dangerous if you suspect there may be one in the area.

Moldugas are giant Monsters that swim through the Sand of the Gerudo Desert.[5] They resemble four-legged Fish and patrol their territories in search of prey. Moldugas are sensitive to sound, and they will rise out of Sand to eat whatever they can find.[5] As a result, it is considered dangerous to enter the domain of a Molduga.[5]

Once they become aware of Link's presence, Moldugas will barrel towards and attempt to ram into him. Moldugas can be fought while Shield Surfing with the help of a Sand Seal. Due to their sensitivity to loud noises, Link can strike them with Remote Bombs or Bomb Arrows, causing them to be stunned once they jump out of the Sand.[6] When defeated, Moldugas drops one or two Treasure Chests containing various Weapons, Molduga Fins, and Molduga Guts.

As part of the "Medicinal Molduga" Side Quest, Malena requires Molduga Guts in order to cure her husband's illness, but none of the soldiers in Gerudo Town are willing to defeat one for her.[7] When Link brings her Molduga Guts, she gives him a Gold Rupee as a reward.[8]

After Link defeats Calamity Ganon for the first time, he will be able to ask Kilton about Moldugas.[4] As part of his research, he has determined that four Moldugas can be found in the entirety of Hyrule Kingdom.[9] Due to their size, Kilton is unable to safely approach them, so he asks Link if he could defeat all of them, allowing Kilton to analyze the scent their fluids leave behind.[10] When Link returns to Kilton after defeating all of the Moldugas, he will be able to smell them clearly, and he gives Link the Medal of Honor: Molduga as a reward.[11]

As part of The Champions' Ballad DLC Pack, the Molduking will appear in the East Barrens. It is a more powerful subspecies of Molduga, known to build up energy by sleeping underground for hundreds of years.[12]

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity

Moldugas may pay tribute to Molgera, the Boss of the Wind Temple in The Wind Waker. Molgera itself has its name derived from mogura, which is Japanese for mole. The four Moldugas act similar to Molgera by being submerged in Sand, further supporting this claim.

The Molduga is a menacing beast... None who face one escape unscathed... So perhaps it's foolish to expect anyone to stick their neck out for a stranger...
