Slime Eel
Slime Eel is the Boss of the Catfish's Maw in Link's Awakening.[1][2] It is a giant eel-like monster that opposes Link in an attempt to prevent him from waking the Wind Fish.
Characteristics
As the battle starts, the Slime Eel will create a large hole in the ground and four smaller holes in the walls of the chamber. Its spiked tail will then spin around continuously from the hole in the ground, which Link must avoid at all costs. Link must wait until its head pops out of one of the walls and use the Hookshot to pull it out into the open. Once revealed, an exposed heart will appear on its body which Link must strike with his Sword. The further Link is from the Slime Eel when it is pulled out, the longer it will take for it to retreat back into the hole. Sometimes, Link will pull out a fake eel that will explode. In Link's Awakening for Nintendo Switch, fake eels have black eyes with white pupils, rather than white eyes with black pupils like the real one. This makes it much easier to tell the fake eels from the real Slime Eel. Before the Slime Eel's destruction at the hands of Link, it states that Link does not know what kind of island Koholint Island is, which appears to amuse it.[3]
Defeating the Slime Eel gets Link the Wind Marimba as well as a Heart Container.
Trivia
- The spiked object on the end of the Slime Eel's tail is the same design as the spiked ball wielded by the Ball & Chain Soldiers found in the same game, as well as Oracle of Seasons and Oracle of Ages.
