Weapon Bonuses,(BotW | TotK)[1][2] also known as Seals,(HWAoC)[3] are a recurring mechanic in The Legend of Zelda series.

Overview

Breath of the Wild

Weapon Bonuses are advantageous modifiers randomly given to Items in Link's Inventory when they are first obtained. Despite their name, Weapon Bonuses are not exclusive to Weapons and can also be found on Shields and Bows.

Modifier types

There are several different types of modifiers granted by Weapon Bonuses, and they come in two "tiers" indicated by their color: white and yellow. Although some Weapons are set to have a minimum tier of Weapon Bonus, most are determined by the World Level– a given weapon starts out with no modifiers, then is guaranteed a white one, then a yellow one. This renders

The following is a list of Weapon Bonuses per tier with their effects. Some Weapon Bonuses are only applicable to certain types of Weapons; there are also more specific restrictions expanded upon in the next section.

Weapons obtained through amiibo are guaranteed the maximum value for their applicable modifier tier (white or yellow), but will display as white regardless of which one it actually received. Additionally, due to a bug, Shields dropped from amiibo chests which are meant to have the white Shield Guard Up bonus will apply that value to the durability and correctly display it as a Durability Up bonus. This means that Shields from amiibo cannot receive Shield Guard Up, and have two possible values for Durability Up. This does not apply to the second-tier Shield Guard Up+ bonus, though as mentioned this will display as white bonus.

There are also two unused types of Weapon Bonus within the game, both of which would be yellow: Shield Surf Up, which multiplies the friction of a Shield when Shield Surfing by 0.2, and an unnamed bonus for Bows internally called AddZoomRapid, which gives any bow a zoom property similar to the Golden Bow or Phrenic Bow.

Modifier chances

The particular Weapon Bonus received by a certain item is random within its tier. However, the bonuses are not equally likely; the algorithm used by the game to choose a Weapon Bonus has the following effective percentages:

WeaponsShieldsBows
Weapons Tier Chance
Attack Up Durability Up Critical Hit Long Throw
Most Weapons White 25% 33.3̅3̅% 41.6̅6̅% -
White 50% 50% Impossible -
Most Weapons Yellow 25% 33.3̅3̅% - 41.6̅6̅%
Yellow 50% 50% - Impossible
Shields Tier Chance
Shield Guard Up Durability Up
Any Shield (Normal) White 50% 50%
Any Shield (Normal) Yellow 50% 50%
Any Shield (amiibo drop) White 0% 100%[a]
Any Shield (amiibo drop) Yellow 0% 100%[a]
  1. 1.0 1.1 The 50% chance of Shield Guard Up applies the intended value of that bonus to Durability Up, so there is a 50% chance of Durability Up with a wrong value and 50% chance with a correct one.
Bows Tier Chance
Attack Up Durability Up Quick Shot Five-Shot Burst
Any Bow White 50% 50% - -
Most Bows Yellow 25% 33.3̅3̅% 41.6̅6̅% -
Yellow 12.5% 22.2̅2̅% 36.1̅1̅% 29.16̅%

Unobtainable modifiers

Aside from the above Items which have inherent exceptions to certain modifiers, there are some Weapons that can technically receive Weapon Bonuses but do not, in practice, receive certain or any modifiers due to restrictions that happen to be placed on every instance of the Item. However, they may be seen with gameplay modification or glitches.

After the World Level has reached a high enough point, white Weapon Bonuses (most notably the Critical Hit effect) effectively go "extinct", becoming Permanently Missable Items. The Hero's Shield can also never receive Shield Guard Up due to the bug explained above which affects amiibo drops, and it is amiibo-exclusive.

There are also some Items which may have only one or a few instances where they may have a Weapon Bonus, such as the Torch in a Treasure Chest inside Divine Beast Vah Rudania.

Tears of the Kingdom

The Weapon Bonus system in Tears of the Kingdom is mostly the same as in Breath of the Wild. However, instead of ranges that vary per Equipment, the random value for Attack Up and Durability Up bonuses is within set ranges for any Equipment. In addition to Weapon Bonuses, certain Weapons now have Weapon Traits, which grant Weapons within a certain series unique abilities.

If Rock Octorok sucks up a Weapon, Shield, or Bow when inhaling, it will spit it out with a new Weapon Bonus as well as replenishing its Durability. Rare or unique equipment cannot receive Weapon Bonuses under normal circumstances, except for the Hylian Shield, which can receive Weapon Bonuses from scaling, Rock Octoroks, and when purchased from Cece.

The pieces of Equipment that cannot normally receive a Weapon Bonus include:
