Lightning is a recurring mechanic and Weather phenomenon in The Legend of Zelda series.[1]

Overview

Ocarina of Time

Lightning appears exclusively as an aesthetic weather effect in Ocarina of Time. Lightning temporarily appears whenever Link plays the "Song of Storms". Lightning also appears during Link's prophetic dream of Ganondorf, during the Deku Tree's tale of Ganondorf and the Triforce, when Princess Zelda and Impa are fleeing Hyrule Castle Town, in Kakariko Village while Bongo Bongo is escaping from Beneath the Well, and during the final battle with Ganon.

Breath of the Wild

Left Lightning appears whenever the Weather turns stormy in Breath of the Wild. If Link wears metallic Armor or wields a metallic Shield, Weapon, or Bow, small jolts of electricity will begin discharging from Link to the ground. The discharges will then rapidly increase in frequency until Lightning strikes Link, dealing devastating damage.[2] Lightning will also strike enemies wielding metallic Weapons, Bows, and Shields.

Electric Wizzrobes[verification needed] and Thunder Wizzrobes are capable of summoning thunderstorms with their Lightning and Thunderstorm Rods. Divine Beast Vah Naboris is capable of generating concentrated Lightning strikes, causing it to be a threat to those who approach it. Thunderblight Ganon is capable of summoning metal rods and subsequently drawing Lightning to them. Urbosa, the Gerudo Champion, was skilled in Lightning Magic and could generate Lightning with a snap of her fingers. After defeating Thunderblight Ganon and freeing Urbosa's spirit, she grants her magical abilities to Link in the form of Urbosa's Fury, allowing Link to strike all enemies with bolts of Lightning within a set radius. The Unshockable Set Bonus, granted by the Thunder Helm and the Rubber Set, protects Link from all Lightning strikes except for those released from Vah Naboris.

Prior to completing the "Trial of Thunder" Shrine Quest, Lightning will perpetually strike the ground surrounding Thundra Plateau. Similarly, a Lightning storm will perpetually occur in the area surrounding the hidden Qukah Nata Shrine prior to completing the Shrine Quest, "A Song of Storms".

Other Appearances

Hyrule Warriors

HWDE Lightning Element Icon.png

Lightning is one of the five Elements in Hyrule Warriors. The Lightning Element will cause airborne enemies to take extra damage from miniature Lightning strikes with each hit until they land on the ground.[3] The Electricity+ Skill makes it easier to keep enemies from hitting the ground, increasing the effectiveness of Lightning-based Weapons.

Lightning is the Elemental attribute of Link's Gauntlets, Link's Spinner, Sheik's Harp, Lana's Book of Sorcery, Princess Zelda's Baton, Ganondorf's Trident, Linkle's Boots, Yuga's Picture Frame.

In the "Liberation of the Triforce" Scenario, Ganondorf can cause Lightning to strike randomly throughout the battlefield.[4] The spots where Lightning will strike will glow momentarily before being struck. After being summoned, Ganon will also launch a Lightning Attack on the Castle Keep.[5]

Hyrule Warriors Legends

In Hyrule Warriors Legends, Lightning is also one of the dual attributes of Link's Crackling Rod, Link's Great Fairy of Tempests, Link's Stormy-Eyed Epona, Impa's Crackling Naginata, Midna's Thunderhead Shackle, Cia's Crackling Scepter, Skull Kid's Crackling Ocarina, and King Daphnes's Supercharged Sail.

Both Food and Companion Fairies may carry Lightning attributes. Bee Larvae, Carrots, Chu Jelly, Deku Nuts, Hyoi Pears, Mushroom Spores, and Pegasus Seeds are Food which fall under the Lightning Element. When given to a Companion Fairy with a Lightning attribute, stat bonuses are increased and decreased stats are reduced. All Lightning-themed Food, except for gold-ranked Food with a negative trait more than four points, will not negatively affect a Lightning-themed Companion Fairy's personality traits when consumed.
