You can convert useless items into bottles too.  The downside is they're only good for items you catch and use manually (fish, fairies, blue flame, and bugs).  To convert a useless item, swing a real bottle at something you can catch in it, press the Start button at mid-swing, swap the bottle on the C icon with the useless C item, and return to gameplay.  Remember, merchants and cows do not acknowledge converted bottles, and fairies do not uncork themselves to heal Link if he dies.

Empty bottles are probably the most useful item in The Legend of Zelda games. These bottles can be found by doing certain sidequests or just by finding them in certain hidden areas. Some need to be obtained to progress through the game. An empty bottle is an item that is used for storing other items like water, potions, fairies, poes, Chu Jelly, milk, fish, bugs, Great Fairy's Tears, and other various, usually liquid, things. In most games, Link is only able to collect four bottles. However, Majora's Mask has six.

A Link to the Past

File:Magicbottle.png
File:Bottle Sprite LttP.gif

They are not called empty bottles in A Link to the Past but magic bottles. However, many things in A Link to the Past are called magic even though some have no magical properties whatsoever.

  1. Link gets the first one by buying it for 100 rupees from a merchant in Kakariko Village.
  2. Located in the Kakariko bar, entering the bar through the back door.
  3. Under the stone bridge near Lake Hylia. Link will need the flippers to swim under the bridge. Talk to the guy once there, and he will present Link with it.
  4. In a blue chest in the blacksmiths' home in the Dark World after Link obtains the Tempered Sword. Take it to the "average guy" in the Desert of Mystery, and promise not to tell anyone he is a thief. He'll open the chest and give Link the empty bottle.

Ocarina of Time

File:Empty bottle.JPG

There are four bottles in Ocarina of Time.

Through a glitch in the game, Link can convert useless items into bottles. The downside is they're only good for items he catches and uses manually (fish, fairies, blue flame, and bugs). To convert a useless item, swing a real bottle at something Link can catch in it, press the Start button at mid-swing, swap the bottle on the C icon with the useless C item, and return to gameplay. Because this is due to a game glitch, merchants and cows do not acknowledge converted bottles, and fairies do not uncork themselves to heal Link if he dies.

  1. Found by completing the Cucco Lady's challenge as Young Link in Kakariko Village — the goal is to round up all of her chickens into the pen next to her.
  2. Located underwater at Lake Hylia near the hidden underwater passage leading from Zora's Domain. It contains Ruto's Letter.
  3. Obtained by beating the Super Cucco Game in Lon Lon Ranch.
  4. Earned by collecting all the Big Poes for the Poe trader in Hyrule Castle Town as Adult Link.

Majora's Mask

File:Empty bottle.JPG

There are six bottles in total in Majora's Mask, though not necessarily in this order.

  1. At the potion shop.
  2. After winning the Goron Races and contains Gold Dust.
  3. At Great Bay after winning the Beaver Falls Race.
  4. Found in the Milk Bar the third night, after single-handedly delivering the Special Delivery to Mama item to Madame Aroma. It contains Chateau Romani.
  5. Received from Romani after Helping Romani and Cremia and contains Milk.
  6. Found in the Ikana Graveyard. Using the Captain's Hat, have the Stalchildren open the grave after 6PM on the Final Day. Inside, help Dampé dig up 6 patches of dirt, and defeat the Big Poe to reveal a Chest containing the final bottle.

The Wind Waker

File:Emptybottle.png

Link can receive up to four bottles to store things in The Wind Waker.

  1. Found on Dragon Roost Island when Link helps Valoo — as a grateful offering from Medli.
  2. Mila of Windfall Island also gives Link an empty bottle after being successful with catching her trying to steal from Zunari.
  3. Found off the coast of Bomb Island, with the aid of the telescope man, inside a chest on board a submarine.
  4. Located at Rock Spire Isle (after acquiring Beedle's Chart) inside Beedle's floating shop. It is worth (an extortionate) 500 rupees.

With the exception of the first bottle from Medli, there is no real significance as to which order the bottles are obtained in.

The Minish Cap

In The Minish Cap, Link can receive up to four bottles.

  1. Found in Trilby Highlands by defeating a Deku Scrub. He will then give Link the bottle if he pays him 20 Rupees. This bottle is mandatory to continue onwards.
  2. In a chest in the Eastern Hills just south of Eenie and Meenie's garden. The chest appears after Link fuses Kinstones with Smith.
  3. In shop in Castle Town. Link needs to shrink down to Minish size and get to it from above. But the shopkeeper will let Link have it if Link does a little errand for the him. The bottle has dog food in it, and the shopkeeper wants it fed to his dog. After Link goes to the shopkeeper's house near Lake Hylia and feeds the dog, he can keep the bottle.
  4. Hidden in a cave near Lon Lon Ranch. Collecting it is a very large sidequest. The cave is sealed with a stone wall. Link has to fuse Kinstones with a certain farmer to get a Goron to open the cave. In the cave is a series of walls. Each wall has to be destroyed by a number of Gorons. Each wall takes more Gorons to break than the previous one. There are several Mysterious Walls hidden in caves throughout Hyrule. Catch a bottle with the Fishing Rod

There are four bottles in Twilight Princess which are found, purchased, or given:

  1. Given to Link by Sera as a reward for returning her cat. The bottle is already half-full of milk. It is also required to obtain this bottle to progress further in the game.
  2. Bought from Coro in the Faron Woods. He offers to sell it to Link (full of Lantern Oil) after he gives Link the key to the gate to the Forest Temple. This occurs after Link restores the light to Faron Woods. This bottle is also required to progress, as it comes with a lantern, which is necessary to get to the Forest Temple.
  3. Found in Hena's Fishing Hole. Fish in the small pond near the bridge on the west end enough times and Link will pull it up.
  4. Given to Link by Jovani for returning 20 Poe Souls to him. It's full of Great Fairy's Tears when Link gets it.

Agitha carries two Bottles with her in a basket; however, these are unobtainable.
