Kotake is a recurring character in The Legend of Zelda series.

Biography

Ocarina of Time

Kotake, along with her sister, Koume, are twin Gerudo witches who possess ice and fire powers, respectively. Kotake and Koume collectively have the power to combine to form Twinrova, a witch with both ice and fire powers. Because of her ice-based powers, Kotake is weak to Koume's fire powers, a property that is transferred to Twinrova upon their fusion.[1]

Together, Kotake and Koume acted as surrogate mothers for Ganondorf,[3] raising him to be evil in the hopes of fostering his role as the Demon King, Ganon.[4] Kotake and Koume operated in secret, using the Spirit Temple as a hideout.[5] Nabooru learned of this and attempted to enter the Spirit Temple to steal their treasure and potentially thwart their plans. Because of the small passages in the Spirit Temple, Nabooru is unable to navigate it and so enlists Link's aid to steal the Silver Gauntlets from within. However, as Link retrieves the Gauntlets, Kotake and Koume discover Nabooru and capture her with the intent of brainwashing her with their black magic.[10][11]

When Link reenters the Spirit Temple seven years later, he is greeted by Kotake and Koume, who force him to battle an Iron Knuckle as punishment for intruding upon their hideout.[18] After defeating the Iron Knuckle, it is revealed that Kotake and Koume outfitted Nabooru with Iron Knuckle armor and forced her to defend the Spirit Temple against her will.[19] After Nabooru comes to her senses, Kotake and Koume decide to brainwash her once more and magically transport her elsewhere.[20][21][22][23] They then retreat deeper into the Spirit Temple, waiting for Link to meet them once more.

When Link enters the Spirit Temple's boss chamber, Kotake and Koume mock him, claiming that he is there to offer himself as a sacrifice for Ganondorf.[24] Prior to their fight with Link, Kotake swears to freeze Link to his soul.[25] After Link deals enough damage to the duo, Koume tells her sister that it is time to get serious,[26] prompting them to launch their Double Dynamite Attack, fusing into Twinrova.[27]

When Link defeats Twinrova, Kotake and Koume separate, resolving to come at Link more seriously.[28] However, Kotake notices a halo floating above Koume's head, leading to an argument between the two as they both float toward the sky.[41] Before they disappear completely, Kotake and Koume threaten to return and haunt Link from beyond the grave.[42]

Majora's Mask

Kotake is the Terminan counterpart of the Kotake from Hyrule in Majora's Mask. Kotake resides in the Southern Swamp with her sister, Koume. Kotake is the Manager of the Magic Hags' Potion Shop where she brews Potions from the Mushrooms that Koume has collected.[43] However, prior to Link's arrival, the Skull Kid attacked Koume and left her stranded in the Woods of Mystery. If Link comes to Kotake with news of this on the First Day, she will give Link a Bottle with Red Potion, or fill his current Bottle with the Potion if he has already obtained the Bottle from her, and instruct him to give it to her helpless sister.[44] However, if Link doesn't visit the Magic Hags' Potion Shop until the Second Day, he will instead see Kotake leaving her Shop by broomstick to search the Woods of Mystery herself. Inside the Woods of Mystery, she will fly around calling for Koume,[45] asking Link if he has seen her.[46] If Link tells her of Koume's incident with the Skull Kid there, she will give him the Potion and return to her Shop.[47]

Inside the Magic Hags' Potion Shop, Kotake laments the fact that she does not have Mushrooms fragrant enough to brew more powerful Potions,[48] prompting Link to give her a Magic Mushroom. If Link does not have any Mushrooms, she will claim that her nose once allowed her to find Mushrooms with ease, though her old age has made her lose her olfactory senses.[49] If Link attempts to purchase a Blue Potion without providing the necessary ingredients for it, she will refuse to sell any to him, citing her lack of Mushrooms.[50] If Link approaches Kotake while wearing the Mask of Scents, she will grow excited and inform him that the Mask will allow him to easily find Mushrooms in the Southern Swamp.[51]

After Link rescues Koume, Kotake will ask him if he has taken the Boat Cruise yet.[52]

In the Oracle of Seasons manga by Akira Himekawa, Koume and Kotake ambush Link, Maple and Ricky as they are heading to Northern Peak. The duo do this by tricking Link after disguising Kotake as an elderly woman in need of assistance atop a gorge.[53] Out of kindness, Link resolves to help her reach her destination.[54] As Link grabs her hand, he questions how the old woman was capable of reaching their position unaided.[55] When he is distracted, Kotake drags him down the side of the gorge into a pit infested with Moldorms. Kotake and Koume reveal themselves to Link's group after they have been cornered, criticizing them for being too kind.[56][57] With the help of the recently-awakened Moosh, Link and his friends escape to fight Onox. During the decisive battle with Onox, Kotake and Koume use their magical powers to summon Onox's true form from the Dark Realm.[58]

Oracle of Ages (Himekawa)

After their failed plan to destroy Holodrum, Kotake and Koume resume their work by following Link to Labrynna in the Oracle of Ages manga by Akira Himekawa. In "Oracle of Ages: Nayru", she watches over Link's victory in the fighting contest in Lynna City from the Room of Rites, sardonically congratulating him while resolving to defeat him.[59][60] They send Veran to enact their plan of destroying Link, though they warn her that he has the power to repel evil magic.[61][62] Veran initiates this plan by possessing Nayru, the Oracle of Ages, and tricking Queen Ambi into constructing the Black Tower. In doing so, Queen Ambi unwittingly spreads misery among her people, which Kotake and Koume intend to use to ignite the Flame of Sorrow.

Kotake and Koume reappear in "Veran's True Form" after Link and Sir Raven defeat Veran, having traveled to the past to continue their dark designs. In her dying breath, Veran offers her own sorrows to Kotake and Koume.[63] Upon receiving the collective sorrow from Veran, Kotake and Koume appear before Link, who recognizes them from his journey in Holodrum.[64][65] Kotake and Koume reintroduce themselves as Twinrova and explain that the Flames of Destruction and Flames of Sorrow have both been ignited.[66][67] Sacrificing themselves as the final catalyst, they manage to resurrect Ganon. However, Princess Zelda calls to Link from across time to inform him that Ganon's resurrection wasn't totally complete, as Twinrova only managed to return the mindless body, filled with rage.[68]

Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS

Kotake and her sister, Koume, appear as stage hazards in the Gerudo Valley stage of Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS. Kotake attacks the right side of the stage with ice.

Nomenclature

The names of Kotake and her sister, Koume, are derived from the elderly twin sisters in the Japanese mystery novel 八つ墓村 (The Village of Eight Gravestones).[69][70]
