The Court Poet is a character mentioned in Breath of the Wild.[3]

Biography

The Court Poet was a Sheikah who formerly served the Royal Family of Hyrule.[2] He was close in age to Zelda.[4] Due to his knowledge on ancient civilizations, he accompanied her on surveys of ancient Sheikah ruins.[5]

Despite knowing it was doomed, the Court Poet fell in love with Zelda.[6] However, Zelda was supposedly in love with her knight, Link.[7] As Link was neither nobility nor royalty, the Court Poet was jealous of him.[8]

When the Great Calamity struck, the Court Poet fled to Kakariko Village.[9] On the way, he witnessed Link sacrifice himself at Fort Hateno to protect Zelda.[10] Once Impa explained what happened to him, the Court Poet decided to seek out the Ancient Songs dedicated to the Ancient Hero who defeated Calamity Ganon in the past to be passed down to Link upon his return.[11] His desire was that they would assist Link when the time came for him to save Zelda.[12]

After the Great Calamity, the Court Poet believed so much that Link would return that he wrote a song, entitled the "Song of the Hero."[13] During this time, he took on Kass as a student in order to pass down the Ancient Songs, hoping that he would one day be able to share them with Link.[12] He shared his memories of Zelda with Kass, which brought him much joy.[14][15]

Unfortunately, the Court Poet passed away before Link awoke from the Slumber of Restoration. Before he passed, he made Kass promise to share his song with Link.[1] Due to this, Kass is unable to return to Rito Village until he has fulfilled his teacher's promise.[16] After singing the song for Link, Kass asks on behalf of his teacher if he will accept it.[17] When Link accepts the song, Kass will thank him.[18]

During the "EX The Champions' Ballad" Main Quest, Kass sets out to complete a song that the Court Poet left unfinished before his passing.[19] The song was written in honor of the Champions and the trials they faced.[20] There are verses dedicated to Daruk,[21] Mipha,[22] Revali,[23] and Urbosa.[24] Kass decides to journey to the locations mentioned in the lyrics in hopes of finishing the song.[25] After completing the song, Kass dubs it "The Champions' Ballad."
