"Secret of the Ring Ruins" is a Main Quest in Tears of the Kingdom.[1]

Overview

During the "Find the Fifth Sage" Main Quest, Purah asks Link to search for clues as to the remaining Sage's whereabouts among ruins from the ancient past.[2] In Kakariko Village, he can find Paya and Tauro looking up at the Floating Ring Ruin. Upon hearing that the Zelda who ordered them to stop was actually a Phantom Ganon, they are initially shocked, though Paya recalls that she seemed different than the real Zelda.[3] Tauro realizes that the Floating Ring Ruin may be a threat to Demon King Ganondorf, and he decides that they should investigate as soon as possible.[4]

Paya agrees with Tauro, giving him permission to open the Floating Ring Ruin.[5] Tauro is so excited that he begins using phrasing from Lurelin Village, which Paya notes.[6] However, Tauro does not know how to access the Ring Ruin.[7] Despite the Floating Ring Ruin being hollow, there is no entrance leading to its interior.[8] As is the case with the other Ring Ruins, he believes that there could be a Ring Ruins Stone Slab with Zonai writing inside.[9] First, he wants to confirm the existence of the Stone Slab, though he decides to inform the other members of the Zonai Survey Team.[10] Afterwards, "Secret of the Ring Ruins" will begin.

Using Ascend, Link is able to enter the Floating Ring Ruin and take a Picture of the Ring Ruins Stone Slab inside. Tauro will be confused having seen this, though he believes he imagined it.[11][12] When Link shows his Picture to Tauro, he is shocked, calling over Paya and Calip to see it.[13] As they examine the Picture, Tauro is able to decipher the words "Mineru" and southeast.[14] Calip notes that Mineru could be the name of a Sage [15]

Although Tauro is excited, he notices that Paya appears to be thinking.[16] She is able to translate more of the Zonai writing, referring to a Dragon land in the southeast.[17] Once Tauro confirms it, she attributes her knowledge to studying the Zonai language.[18] Fearing Paya is upstaging him, Calip points out that the Ring Ruins Stone Slab could be referring to the Zonai Ruins.[19] Tauro praises Calip for this, which he appreciates.[20] Looking back on what they have learned, Tauro determines that they can find out more by visiting the Zonai Ruins.[21] He asks Calip to accompany him, which he agrees to.[22] They plan to established their base camp near the Popla Foothills Skyview Tower.[23] Tauro and Calip then depart for Faron.[24]

At the Popla Foothills Skyview Tower, Link can find Calip near a makeshift Tent.[25] He welcomes Link to his base, revealing that Tauro has already left to see the Zonai Ruins near Dracozu Lake.[26] If it is daytime, Calip expresses his hope to find more clues, though he claims he needs to rest before joining Tauro.[27] At night, Calip is worried that Tauro has yet to return, wondering if he is caught up in his investigation.[28]

Among the Zonai Ruins, Link can find a Note on the Table written by Tauro, telling Calip to meet him inside a room revealed by rubble falling away.[29] There, he encounters Tauro, who is examining a Zonai mural. He is happy to see Link, and he reveals that he has made a huge discovery.[30] Tauro directs his attention to the mural, which he thinks may have been preserved due to Zonai Technology.[31] He has been able to decipher some of the Zonai writing as well, which states to wear the "electric garb" found along the "forest serpent".[32] This reminds Tauro of a Song that referred to the Dracozu River as a forest Dragon.[33] Continuing his translation, Tauro states that a Zonai Charge must be offered to an altar located at a "tail," and he believes that he can make more discoveries by uncovering the meaning behind this riddle.[34] Tauro also points out a Treasure Chest in the room, which he has been unable to open.[35]

Using his Right Arm, Link is able to open the nearby Treasure Chest and receive the Charged Shirt. He can also find two similar rooms that are marked by Tall Dragon Pillars, within which he can find Treasure Chests containing the Charged Headdress and the Charged Trousers. Near the southwestern end of the Dracozu River, Link comes across one last room marked by a Tall Dragon Pillar. When he places a Zonai Charge on its altar while wearing the entire Charged Set, the eyes of the Tall Dragon Pillars will begin to glow and their horns start to spark. All of them are simultaneously stuck by Lightning, and as the Sky above them clears, the Thunderhead Isles and Dragonhead Island will be revealed.

Drawn by the Lightning, Tauro and Calip arrive at the altar.[36] They are shocked to find Link inside, though Calip is relieved that he is unharmed.[37] Tauro asks Link if he knows what happened.[38] He is impressed by Link's findings, though Calip laments that they are unable to visit the Sky Islands themselves.[39] Since he needs to make a report to Purah, Tauro leaves Calip in charge of investigating the Zonai Ruins further.[40] Though Calip is hesitant at first, Tauro's assurances convince him to stay.[41]

When Link reaches Dragonhead Island, he can find an interior chamber blocked by a large stone door similar to the one in the Temple of Time. In order to open this door, he needs at least 10 Hearts. Inside the chamber is the Zonai Relic, and when interacted with, he will hear the voice of Mineru telling him to follow the beam of light it emits.[42] At this point, "Secret of the Ring Ruins" will be finished, and "Guidance from Ages Past will begin.[note 1]

Objectives

Stage Description
1 After you told Paya and Tauro about the false Princess Zelda, they began exploring the Ring Ruin previously forbidden by the impostor. They believe there is a stone slab carved with Zonai writing inside.

Entering the site and investigating the slab will assist their research.
2 You deciphered the Zonai text carved in the stone slab inside the Ring Ruin. Tauro and his colleague are following a lead to the Zonai Ruins in balmy Faron in the southeast.

They're gathering at the Skyview Tower near the ruins.
3 You traveled to the Skyview Tower in the Popla Foothills.

Calip, who industriously assembled the team's base of operations, informed you that Tauro planned to start investigating the Zonai Ruins to the southeast by Dracozu Lake.
4 You reunited with Tauro in ruins presided over by stone dragon statues. Tauro deciphered the code found on an ancient mural in the ruins:

Wear the electric garb hidden at long-necked dragons along the wide-mouthed forest serpent. Offer a Zonai charge to the altar at the tail.
5 You donned the charged attire found in the dragon-pillar ruins and offered a Zonai charge at the altar.

A fork of lightning heralded the appearance of a new sky island.
6 You opened the door on Dragonhead Island.

Inside, you discovered what appears to be a Zonai relic on a pedestal in the center of the chamber.
2 The floor of the chamber on Dragonhead Island opened when you touched the relic. After the relic fired a beam of green light to the ground, who heard a mysterious voice in your head:

"Link... Chosen protector of Zelda... Take this... Follow the light..."

  2. "All right! We have a plan. Let's split up the work and get to it! You four go back to your homelands and gather information about ruins that might be related to the remaining sage. Linky, search around and see if you can find any other undiscovered leads! Everyone's relying on you! Don't let us down!" — Purah (Tears of the Kingdom)
  3. "Wh-what? The Zelda who appeared after the Upheaval was a creation of the Demon King? And the real Princess Zelda still hasn't been found? But... How can this be true?" — Tauro (Tears of the Kingdom)
"It's such an unbelievable tale, and yet... I trust you completely, Master Link. It must be as you say. It is hard to explain, but the princess we saw was somehow unfamiliar... It was as though her very aura was different." — Paya (Tears of the Kingdom)
  4. "But if she was an impostor the whole time...that would mean... The real reason she ordered us to close off the floating Ring Ruin was... Because the Demon King saw it as a threat! Isn't that right?! That only means one thing. We should investigate the floating Ring Ruin immediately!" — Tauro (Tears of the Kingdom)
  5. "You are exactly right! There is no longer any reason to prohibit your research. Let's open up the floating Ring Ruin at once, Mr. Tauro!" — Paya (Tears of the Kingdom)
  6. "Knowledge is tugging on the line! Time to reel in some results!" — Tauro (Tears of the Kingdom)
"Hee-hee. Your Lurelin phrasing is coming through, Mr. Tauro. You must really be pleased!" — Paya (Tears of the Kingdom)
  7. "It's just... Hmm. There's one problem. We still need to determine how to conduct the survey." — Tauro (Tears of the Kingdom)
  8. "It's clear that the interior of this Ring Ruin is hollow. Sadly, there doesn't seem to be an entrance." — Tauro (Tears of the Kingdom)
  9. "If the contents of the other Ring Ruins are any indication... There should be a stone slab inside engraved with Zonai script." — Tauro (Tears of the Kingdom)
  10. "First, we should look for a way to confirm that there's a stone slab inside. However, we also don't want to damage these precious ruins... Oh, pardon me. I was lost in thought. I'd better hurry and tell everyone about this so we can open up the ruins." — Tauro (Tears of the Kingdom)
  11. "He didn't just... Did he?" — Tauro (Tears of the Kingdom)
  12. "Huh? It looked like you disappeared into the ring... But hat can't be right. Ah, forget I said anything. I must have imagined it." — Tauro (Tears of the Kingdom)
  13. "[What about this image?] What's this you've got? Huh? Could it... Could it really be... Paya! Calip! Look at this!" — Tauro (Tears of the Kingdom)
  14. "... Could this be...the interior of the floating Ring Ruin?! Wow! The stone slab is so clearly visible!" — Tauro (Tears of the Kingdom)
"There appear to be Zonai inscriptions on this one as well, just like in the other Ring Ruins. Tauro, if you would?" — Paya (Tears of the Kingdom)
"Right! Let me see what I can decipher. Hmm... "...promise...Zelda...solemnly signed... Mineru, Sage of... "...hide the key...southeast... Entrust...future...wish...defeat...Demon King..." That's all I can make out. There's some lettering I can't figure out before "southeast," but "Mineru" seems to be someone's name." — Tauro (Tears of the Kingdom)
  15. "Hmm. Look at the context of "Mineru." I do believe this is the first time one of these slabs has put a name to a sage! It also mentions "Zelda" and a "Demon King." How fascinating!" — Calip (Tears of the Kingdom)
  16. "Aha! The inscriptions are telling us all sorts of essential information!" — Tauro (Tears of the Kingdom)
"..." — Paya (Tears of the Kingdom)
"What's the matter?" — Tauro (Tears of the Kingdom)
  17. "Oh, nothing. It's just... That part before the "southeast" section... I think it says..."dragon land."" — Paya (Tears of the Kingdom)
  18. "Hm? Ah! You're right! Paya knows her stuff. This should be read as "dragon land...southeast." Fantastic work, Paya!" — Tauro (Tears of the Kingdom)
"Oh, thank goodness I've proven useful! It seems my continued Zonai-language studies have paid off." — Paya (Tears of the Kingdom)
  19. "Oh no...I'm being upstaged! Ahem. Where were we? Something about a dragon land to the southeast? Hmm. How familiar are you with southeast Hyrule? There's a site in Faron that has long been known as the Zonai Ruins. It predates the ruins falling from the sky, and is home to many ancient relics. If memory serves, there were dragon designs on those ruins that I haven't seen anywhere else." — Calip (Tears of the Kingdom)
  20. "Oho, Calip! Great catch! The Zora Ruins in Faron! There's a good chance that's exactly what this is pointing us at. That's our Calip! Fantastic work!" — Tauro (Tears of the Kingdom)
"I... I... What did you just say?" — Calip (Tears of the Kingdom)
"That...this inscription is pointing us toward Faron's Zonai Ruins?" — Tauro (Tears of the Kingdom)
"No, not that. The next bit. A certain adjective was used? I believe it started with "fan" and ended with "tastic"? What was it again?" — Calip (Tears of the Kingdom)
"Ah. "Fantastic work," you mean?" — Tauro (Tears of the Kingdom)
"Hee-hee, yes! Fantastic work! That is what you said! Hm. Yes. "Calip, what fantastic work!" he said. Fantastic... Me!" — Calip (Tears of the Kingdom)
  21. "Link, when we put together the script on this stone slab and translate it... We get definite mentions of the Sage Mineru, the Demon King, and someone with the same name as Princess Zelda. Something related to all three of them must be waiting at the Zonai Ruins in southeast Hyrule! We've landed a real catch here! Thank you for your help. Truly. Now we've no time to dawdle. There's research to be done!" — Tauro (Tears of the Kingdom)
  22. "Calip! Will you join me?" — Tauro (Tears of the Kingdom)
"Oh! Of course! I would be a...*ahem*...fantastic addition to the team." — Calip (Tears of the Kingdom)
"Very good! With that settled, let's be off to the Zonai Ruins in Faron! First we head southwest..." — Tauro (Tears of the Kingdom)
  23. "We'll establish a base in the Popla Foothills, at the Skyview Tower by the ruins." — Tauro (Tears of the Kingdom)
  24. "In search of new discoveries... WE MAKE FOR FARON!" — Tauro (Tears of the Kingdom)
  25. "Ah, so you're here. Came to learn about the Zonai from an expert, I gather?" — Calip (Tears of the Kingdom)
  26. "I should welcome you to our humble base of operations. Behold! This is where the real investigation starts. It might not seem like much next to that Skyview Tower, I'll concede. Going forward, our research will proceed from here. Tauro has already gone off to the Zonai Ruins. If memory serves, he spoke of starting his investigation around Dracozu Lake." — Calip (Tears of the Kingdom)
  27. "Go southeast and you should find the Zonai Ruins he volunteered to inspect. I'm curious if the "dragon land" written of at the Ring Ruin will have any more leads on the Demon King or Princess Zelda. Ordinarily, I'd be right there at his side in the field, of course. But I'm worn out from setting up the base. I'll need some time to recuperate before I begin my own survey. Goodness me, is there anyhing at all that slows down Tauro?" — Calip (Tears of the Kingdom)
  28. "I don't know his exact whereabouts, but if you go southeast, you should find the Zonai Ruins he volunteered to inspect. That said...it's night now and he hasn't returned, which is worrying. Did he get swept up in his work at the site? My goodness, the man is absolutely indefatigable." — Calip (Tears of the Kingdom)
  29. "Dear Calip,
The influence of the Upheaval has spread to the Zonai Ruins.

Did you see the pillar-shaped ruin in front of this tent? There shouldn't be artifacts of that kind around here. An anomaly.

And there's more. The rubble at the base of the pillar opened, revealing a way inside. A new discovery!

Naturally, I will be going inside to investigate shortly.

Join me as soon as you can.
    -Tauro
" — Note on the Table (Tears of the Kingdom)
  30. "Aha! You came after all. I figured you would after you made that breakthrough at the Ring Ruins. But listen to this! I've already got a whopper of a discovery on my hook here!" — Tauro (Tears of the Kingdom)
  31. "Here, look at this. It's a Zonai mural, complete with intact text. The style is unmistakable. It's nothing short of miraculous that it's still here and basically intact! Which, come to think of it, might be ascribable to the Zonai's advanced technology." — Tauro (Tears of the Kingdom)
  32. "I've got a fair bit of knowledge of the script, so I just had to try at deciphering it. But some of it still eludes me. Maybe it's a poem? Or some kind of... code, perhaps? Here, I'll read it out loud so we can both get on the same page. This first part says, "Wear the electric garb hidden at long-necked dragons along the wide-mouthed forest serpent." What do you make of "forest serpent" and "dragons" there? To me, it calls to mind the tall pillars found around these ruins designed to look like dragons. "Forest serpent" though... I haven't seen any designs like that. What am I missing? What other "wide-mouthed forest serpent" is there?" — Tauro (Tears of the Kingdom)
  33. "Maybe...hmm. The "forest serpent" bit does remind me of a song that compared the Dracozu River to a forest dragon." — Tauro (Tears of the Kingdom)
  34. "But anyway, there's more to this code. I'll keep reading. Next, it says... "Offer a Zonai charge to the altar at the tail." I'm pretty sure I got that right, but I have no idea what it means. What in the world is a Zonai charge? And where is this tail with an altar? If we can crack all the riddles in this code, I'm sure that even greater discoveries await us!" — Tauro (Tears of the Kingdom)
  35. "There's one other thing I'm curious about. I should've mentioned this, but I found one more Zonai relic at the back of these ruins. Judging from the shape, I think there's something inside, but I can't get it to open. Can't crack the code... Can't get the box open... This just isn't my day." — Tauro (Tears of the Kingdom)
  36. "Calip! Did you see that?! Lightning struck that dragon pillar too! Huh? Is someone in those ruins?!" — Tauro (Tears of the Kingdom)
  37. "Oh! It's you again. We think a terrible lightning strike hit here, but I'm glad to see you weren't hurt." — Calip (Tears of the Kingdom)
  38. "I've never seen lightning strike like that! And even stranger, the dragon statues' eyes seemed to glow just before it. Link, if you know anything about this, fill us in on what happened!" — Tauro (Tears of the Kingdom)
  39. "Unbelievable... A mechanism in the ancient ruins got rid of the thunderclouds and revealed some new sky islands? Great catch! Another amazing discovery on the book. In fact, I'd say... It's the haul of the century!" — Tauro (Tears of the Kingdom)
"It's a significant discovery, to be sure. I'd like to go investigate further, but we have no way of getting up there." — Calip (Tears of the Kingdom)
  40. "Hmm. You're right. That doesn't make it any less exciting, though. We need to report this to Purah right away. Calip, I'm going back to Kakariko Village. I want to write up the recent events around the floating Ring Ruin in a report for Purah. You should stick around here to conduct a thorough investigation. Find out if there are any more discoveries to be made!" — Tauro (Tears of the Kingdom)
  41. "Wha— Remain here? You mean...alone?" — Calip (Tears of the Kingdom)
"Yes! Even if we can't get up to the sky, there's so much to discover on land! It's our duty to unravel all of it. You can do this, Calip!" — Tauro (Tears of the Kingdom)
"He wants me to investigate alone? Fieldwork isn't my strongest suit... But this may be my chance to make a historic discovery! Right! Leave this to me, Taurp. I'll begin preparing at once. I'll need to head back to our base of operations for a bit first." — Calip (Tears of the Kingdom)
  42. "Link... Zelda's chosen protector... Take this. Follow the light." — Mineru (Tears of the Kingdom)
