The Floating Ring Ruin is one of the five Ring Ruins that fell onto Kakariko Village when the Upheaval began. Uniquely, a portion of this Ruin floats in the air above the rest. Shortly after it fell, a Phantom Ganon posing as Zelda appeared in Kakariko Village and gave the Order of Princess Zelda, which forbids anyone from entering the Floating Ring Ruin.[3] Initially, Paya and Tauro believe this is to protect the villagers should the Ruin crash.[4]

When Link first arrives in Kakariko Village, he can find Paya and Tauro looking up at the Floating Ring Ruin. Tauro theorizes that, like the other Ring Ruins, there could be a Ring Ruins Stone Slab inside, but because of the Order of Princess Zelda, he is unable to see for himself.[5][6] If Link gets too close to the Floating Ring Ruin, Calip will stop him.[7][8] During the "Find the Fifth Sage" Main Quest, Link reveals to Paya and Tauro that the Order of Princess Zelda was given by an impostor, allowing them to reopen the Floating Ring Ruin for investigation.[9]

At the start of the "Secret of the Ring Ruins" Main Quest, Tauro reveals that he has no way to access the suspended portion of the Floating Ring Ruin, so he is unable to check if there is a Ring Ruins Stone Slab inside.[10] Using Ascend, Link can enter the interior of the Floating Ring Ruin, where he can then use his Camera to take a Picture of the Slab inside. Paya and Tauro are able to decipher the Zonai script, which refers to a "dragon land" to the southeast.[11][12]

  1. "It's clear that the floating Ring Ruin that we were forbidden to explore is a unique and incredibly valuable find. Several more Ring Ruins with such a shape have fallen down around the village. Most have broken apart in some way. What's fascinating is that a stone slab with writing was found at each site. Deciphering the text showed that each slab contains some rather interesting content, including mention of "sages." There's still so much we don't understand..." — Tauro (Tears of the Kingdom)
  2. "She ordered us all to stay far away from the Ring Ruin that floats above us, no matter what. I saw her myself—the princess, right before my eyes." — Paya (Tears of the Kingdom)
  3. "I returned home to greet them, and that's when Princess Zelda arrived at the village. She seemed almost like a doll of herself... the same outside, but no spirit within. I could not hide my uncertainty. She forbade anyone from entering the broken and partially floating ruin. And then she left. Just like that. She did not mention the village's awful condition or have any words of kindness for our villagers." — Diary of a Chief (Tears of the Kingdom)
  4. "She left as soon as she arrived. I wasn't able to ask her anything more about those unusual instructions. We thought it was to protect the villagers from harm. This ruin does look like it could crash down at any moment. That's what Paya and I suspect at least." — Tauro (Tears of the Kingdom)
  5. "I think that perhaps the ruin floating in the air has a slab that makes mention of the sages! I can't investigate, as that would go against Princess Zelda's direct orders. If only I could meet with her again, I'm sure I could persuade her to change her mind." — Tauro (Tears of the Kingdom)
  6. "I can't stop thinking about that floating Ring Ruin... I don't plan on disobeying Princess Zelda's orders, but it's not easy to abide by them, and I'll tell you why. Each of the other four Ring Ruins we're allowed to enter has a stone slab with Zonai writing on it. They're precious artifacts, with records from an ancient people about purported sages. There's got to be a fifth slab in that floating Ring Ruin with even more information on the sage. I'm beside myself imagining all the details we might be missing out on!" — Tauro (Tears of the Kingdom)
  7. "Hey, you there! Come here!" — Calip (Tears of the Kingdom)
  8. "Haven't you heard? It's strictly forbidden to get near that Ring Ruin, by Princess Zelda's orders. So you'd better be on your way." — Calip (Tears of the Kingdom)
  9. "Wh-what? The Zelda who appeared after the Upheaval was a creation of the Demon King? And the real Princess Zelda still hasn't been found? But... How can this be true?" — Tauro (Tears of the Kingdom)
"It's such an unbelievable tale, and yet... I trust you completely, Master Link. It must be as you say. It is hard to explain, but the princess we saw was somehow unfamiliar... It was as though her very aura was different." — Paya (Tears of the Kingdom)
"But if she was an impostor the whole time...that would mean... The real reason she ordered us to close off the floating Ring Ruin was... Because the Demon King saw it as a threat! Isn't that right?! That only means one thing. We should investigate the floating Ring Ruin immediately!" — Tauro (Tears of the Kingdom)
"You are exactly right! There is no longer any reason to prohibit your research. Let's open up the floating Ring Ruin at once, Mr. Tauro!" — Paya (Tears of the Kingdom)
  10. "It's just... Hmm. There's one problem. We still need to determine how to conduct the survey. It's clear that the interior of this Ring Ruin is hollow. Sadly, there doesn't seem to be an entrance. If the contents of the other Ring Ruins are any indication... There should be a stone slab inside engraved with Zonai script. First, we should look for a way to confirm that there's a stone slab inside. However, we also don't want to damage these precious ruins... Oh, pardon me. I was lost in thought. I'd better hurry and tell everyone about this so we can open up the ruins." — Tauro (Tears of the Kingdom)
  11. "... Could this be...the interior of the floating Ring Ruin?! Wow! The stone slab is so clearly visible!" — Tauro (Tears of the Kingdom)
"There appear to be Zonai inscriptions on this one as well, just like in the other Ring Ruins. Tauro, if you would?" — Paya (Tears of the Kingdom)
"Right! Let me see what I can decipher. Hmm... "...promise...Zelda...solemnly signed... Mineru, Sage of... "...hide the key...southeast... Entrust...future...wish...defeat...Demon King..." That's all I can make out. There's some lettering I can't figure out before "southeast," but "Mineru" seems to be someone's name." — Tauro (Tears of the Kingdom)
  12. "Oh, nothing. It's just... That part before the "southeast" section... I think it says..."dragon land."" — Paya (Tears of the Kingdom)
