The Upheaval is an event in Tears of the Kingdom.[1]

Overview

The Upheaval collectively refers to the strange happenings and turmoil that Hyrule is subjected to during the events of Tears of the Kingdom.[2] It begins when Demon King Ganondorf breaks from his seal Beneath Hyrule Castle, which can be seen during "The Awakening" Memory. Using his Gloom, he propels Hyrule Castle into the Sky, and at the same time, both the Sky Islands and the Chasms appear.[3] A variety of Weapons, including One-Handed Weapons, Two-Handed Weapons, and Spears, were all decayed, leaving them in weakened states.[4] Due to Zelda and Link's disappearance shortly before the Upheaval began, they were declared missing by Purah, and the Monster-Control Crew began leading searches for them.[5]

Symptoms of the Upheaval can be found all over Hyrule. In an effort to prevent new Sages from finding their Secret Stones and awakening to face him, Demon King Ganondorf summoned a Colgera to cause the Extreme Cold Snap in Hebra,[6] a Marbled Gohma to hypnotize the Gorons with Marbled Rock Roast in Eldin,[7] a Mucktorok to rain Sludge upon the Zora in Lanayru,[8] and a Queen Gibdo to create a Sand Shroud in Gerudo.[9] Monster attacks have also become more frequent, with the residents of Lurelin Village being forced to flee as a result of a Pirate Ship invading.[10] Lastly, five Zonai Ruins known as Ring Ruins have fallen on Kakariko Village.[11]

To aid in advancing the Upheaval, Demon King Ganondorf created a Phantom Ganon that disguised itself as Zelda.[12] The impostor gave the Order of Princess Zelda at Kakariko Village, forbidding anyone from entering the Floating Ring Ruin.[13] The Great Fairies also claim to have hidden in their Great Fairy Fountains after the impostor exaggerated the ruined state of Hyrule to them.[14] She gave Yunobo the Weird Mask when he went to investigate the Death Mountain Chasm, which altered his mind and made him distribute Marbled Rock Roasts through his company, YunoboCo.[15] Lastly, she attacked Dorephan with the Sludge Like, resulting in him becoming injured and having to hide in the Pristine Sanctum.[16]

In Lookout Landing, Josha began her Chasm Research, which focuses on the Depths now accessible via the Chasms.[17] The Zonai Survey Team also began their investigation into the Ring Ruins, as well as other notable Zonai Ruins now present throughout Hyrule and within the Depths.[18] The entrances to several Caves have opened as a result of the Upheaval, within which are unique flora and fauna. The Geoglyphs, which were drawn by the ancient people of Hyrule, have also become visible once again.[19]

After Link returns to Hyrule from the Great Sky Island, Purah tasks him with investigating the four major disasters related to the Upheaval as part of the "Regional Phenomena" Main Quest.[20] By completing "Tulin of Rito Village", "Yunobo of Goron City", "Sidon of the Zora", and "Riju of Gerudo Town", he is able to defeat the Bosses summoned by Demon King Ganondorf, ending the crisis in their respective Region and awakening a new Sage.[21][22][23][24] During "Crisis at Hyrule Castle", he defeats the Phantom Ganon posing as Zelda, exposing the figure seen throughout Hyrule as an impostor.[25] He is also able to assist the people of Lurelin Village by driving out the Pirate Ship and helping them rebuild during the "Ruffian-Infested Village" and the "Lurelin Village Restoration Project" Side Adventures.[26][27]

The clouds billowed and rolled as floating islands appeared in the skies, raining chunks of ruins down on us. And strangest of all, Hyrule Castle began to float in the air. I've explored many regions in search of weapons that might still be intact. I found none. At this point, I'd be surprised if there were any intact weapons left in Hyrule. They're also a real pain to repair, so the best thing to do is strengthen them." — Purpen (Tears of the Kingdom)

And the princess you've been seeing was actually an impostor! And the reason she appeared at Hyrule Castle was so the Demon King could lure Link into a trap..." — Purah (Tears of the Kingdom)
"I knew something seemed weird! I mean, about Princess Zelda not doing anything to help with these troubles everywhere in Hyrule. But it's all connected—the Upheaval, the problems our homelands have been facing, the fake princess. It's all happening because the Demon King came back!" — Tulin (Tears of the Kingdom)
  13. "I returned home to greet them, and that's when Princess Zelda arrived at the village. She seemed almost like a doll of herself... the same outside, but no spirit within. I could not hide my uncertainty. She forbade anyone from entering the broken and partially floating ruin. And then she left. Just like that. She did not mention the village's awful condition or have any words of kindness for our villagers." — Diary of a Chief (Tears of the Kingdom)
  14. "Ahhh... I couldn't resist coming out to bask in your beautiful music. Now that I'm outside, I see that the world is not at all how Princess Zelda described it to me. She warned me that an awful gloom was spreading over the land, and that the world would soon be lost to monsters. I hid myself away. But now that I look back on it, while Princess Zelda was speaking to me, I had the feeling that something wasn't right. In the deep dark of that night, I couldn't see her face clearly. Maybe it was someone else entirely..." — Great Fairy Tera (Tears of the Kingdom)
  15. "I remember now, goro! I saw Princess Zelda at Death Mountain's crater. She talked to me and gave me that mask to wear!" — Yunobo (Tears of the Kingdom)
  16. "Link. I will now tell you what happened when we last saw Princess Zelda... As well as the reason behind my seclusion here in the Pristine Sanctum. We encountered Princess Zelda just after Hyrule Castle ascended into the sky. Floating islands appeared as if from nowhere...sludge and fragments of ruins began raining down... Muzu and I had left the domain to investigate these strange occurrences. That is when it happened. Princess Zelda descended from the sky accompanied by a sludge monster. What happened next took us by surprise... She then unleashed the beast upon us." — Dorephan (Tears of the Kingdom)
"King Dorephan valiantly vanquished the threat. However... He was gravely injured by the sludge during the battle... As for Princess Zelda, she vanished without a trace. If word got out that Princess Zelda lost her mind and harmed the Zora king... The resulting turmoil would be devastating. That is why were are temporarily remaining hidden within the Pristine Sanctum." — Muzu (Tears of the Kingdom)

  19. "Link, when Princess Zelda went missing, something else happened all over Hyrule. During the Upheaval, huge pictures appeared out of nowhere, images that sprawled across fields and hills.
